The Ending of a Personal Era
Jul. 19th, 2004 09:25 amSeveral years ago, I got swept along in
stratfordbabe's and
maureen_the_mad's wakes and became an usher for the DC Shakespeare Theatre. Free Theater! See a play as often as you want! Contrast and Compare (since the DC Shakes tends to do plays a season before or after Stratford.)
I have seen several plays I wouldn't have seen otherwise. Some were "eh" but some were brilliant. (The Rivals was a blast, and I'm so grateful I could see it more than once.) Last night's Cyrano was utterly fantastic - well acted, well scripted, well staged. But it is, I think, the last time I will usher. Because I'm tired of hauling fanny into DC for plays I *don't* want to see. Because I'm pissed off that the city took away my free parking spaces. Because last night's late seating break (when we are finally allowed to get into seats if seats are available) was 50 minutes into the show!
I'm tired of paying in sore feet when I can afford to pay cash for a seat - indeed, I got an excellent ticket for this Friday's performance for a mere $24, and I only paid that much because it was late into an almost sold-out run. Next season has only one show I really want to see, so I think it's time to hang up the usher tag and just be a patron.
