History Passing
Feb. 4th, 2006 05:57 pmBetty Friedan is dead of congestive heart failure at age 85.
I grew up in a world where it was mildly surprising that my parents would send me to college.
I grew up in a world where I was asked in all seriousness, "Now that you have your degree, are you going to get a job, or did you just want it before you started your family?"
I grew up in a world where I was told, "When your mother was 19 she'd had two proposals. Hurry up."
After I grew up, I got an advanced degree, a well-paying career, and I own property in my own name, and nobody finds that strange.
Thank you, Betty.
