That lightening strike last night? Didn't take out a branch, it carved 30 feet off the trunk of an oak, so deep the heart's exposed! I need the names of arboreal specialists to know how long before it falls on my garage. (I guess this is the next calamity after all)

By the light of day, I can see pieces of wood and bark all across the yard, some 15 yards. Yes, I will sell chunks to anyone interested, although we have to figure out shippint for the larger pieces.

As unmerciful disaster [has] followed fast and followed faster (bonus points if you know the quote), I've made a few decisions.

1) The tree will come down; I'm not even going to try to save it. I am going to try to sell blasted pieces and firewood. I'm also going to look and see what my insurance company might cover. (They're the same people who cover the car, so they're probably not going to be best pleased with me, but FFS, I didn't hit my own car and there's no way I could have done that tree damage!

2) I've already bought the ChicagoTARDIS plane tickets & membership, and have a roommate; at this point I'd waste more money by not going than attending, so I'll be there. However, the faintest hope of getting to England after Christmas got blown clear across the back yard last night.

3) Remember how I said that if the car was paid off I wouldn't worry much about the damage from being hit? Well, I've sanded down the area where the paint was chipped and covered it with primer and touch-up paint. The slovenliness of the job would embarrass a 3-year-old, but the quarter panel A) won't rust now and B) is not something I have to deal with right now anymore. If someday when I'm not already strapped I finally get the work done, well, insurance cut the check.

Mystery books will start being listed here this weekend. I'm still looking into reasonable prices overseas; I'm willing to ship but the Post Office website is suggesting that the price for anything over a small paperback is insane. Making a run to the real PO tomorrow.

And now: Pictures! )
