I had a whole thing on Cindy Sheehan and what's been said about her going through my head, but I'm just going to point this out because in all the verbiage that's been slung around, I haven't seen anyone use these words yet:

Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or
of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition
the Government for a redress of grievances.

That is all.

Print out those words. Post em on a piece of cardboard. Display them in the window of your car, your apartment, your office cubicle...

(goes off to do exactly that)

(and I added, underneath: It’s not just a good idea. It’s the Constitution.)

The problem is that it's not the government which wants to suppress her; it's the fucking neocons, Fox NotNews, and their ilk. I'm with whoever said (on my flist a couple of days ago) that they're amazed she hasn't been assassinated yet. There are plenty of "law and order" types who don't think that anyone who disagrees with them deserves the benefits of said law and order, and who would do it in a heartbeat if the press coverage wasn't so constant.

Instead, they hang chains off their truck and demolish what they consider to be the symbols of what *she* stands for and not the Ultimate Sacrifice.

Still, many of the neocons are also Strict Constructionalists, which means they want the Constitution to be adhered to exactly as written. So maybe we all need to remind them of exactly what WAS written.

PS - do you read [livejournal.com profile] ginmar? If not, you should...

Yes, but not regularly. I find that if I try to read her when I'm already in a not-good headspace, it's very bad for my blood pressure. Not because I disagree with her, but because the things that piss her off piss me off too.
