I've had enough of the people insuring my car and house giving me the death of a thousand increases. Who is your insurance company and are you happy with them?
I expected my insurance to go up when I moved inside the beltway. I expected it to go up when I bought a newer car.
But I just got a $200 increase for "failure to stop at a red light" - a ticket which I contested in court unsuccessfully. Why didn't I object to the ticket at the time, your honor? Because I was alone with a guy who was lecturing me on proper English and kept his hand around his gun and I didn't feel safe! You know - the freak who just made a point of making an issue of the clothing I wore to court, as if a business skirt is some bizarrly inappropriate costume.
Oh, wait... or maybe he was just reminding you that I was a girl, since the only OTHER people to contest that cop's traffic tickets were also female. But what would an older, male, white judge know about how threatening that kind of stuff could be?
For this, I have to pay an extra $200 on top of the extra $700 for a new car on top of the car payments, and I fucking refuse to.
I'm now with Farmer's for both home and car. Mind, I've never had a claim with them, so I don't know how they'll be in that case. But when I switched my car (I went with them first for home), my agent reminded me that I was a homeowner now and had more to lose, so upped my liability coverage for just about the same premium I was paying previously.
My previous insurance was with Geico, and I honestly can't say enough nice things about how they handled my myriad claims (I drive a little silver car. Little silver car = invisible, and I was hit 4 times in 3 years, 3 of those within 1 year), but my rates just kept going up and up and up--even though none of the accidents was my fault.
I'm still paying more for my car insurance than my homeowners, but I'm also reminded that my house doesn't run around where people can hit it.
I can say much the same about Amica - they've been champs about handling claims and helping me adjust - but paying an extra $200 because an overbearing sexist cop wanted to make his quota as misgynistically as possible really sticks in my craw.
...however (she says nervously) now I can't get the damn thing off my record and Progressive didn't sound like they'd be that much cheaper...
State Farm for Car and Renters. I've been very happy with them. Three times now I've had to file claims on the car (well more than that if you count the string of bad luck I had in December 1996 -- Car accident (my fault), minor accident with the rental, and then a pedestrian claimed I ran over his foot) and they did not raise my premium.
People I've dealt with have been very nice and helpful too.
We have AAA - the insurance arm of the Automobile Club of America. We are *thrilled* with them. Rates are significantly lower than even the lizard place ... and they are very easy to work with.
I have State Farm for house and car, and life insurance to boot, going on 18 years now. Having a personal "I know you by name" insurance agent versus a call desk "not in your time zone" has done wonders for dealing with bad stuff. State Farm is not the cheapest by far, but I have found them wonderful to have in my corner, and I'm willing to pay extra for that.
I had GEICO once upon a time. They were not so kind. I had two accidents, (two collision and one comprehensive, under the most bizarre of circumstances) and GEICO tried to force me into MAIF. State Farm came to my rescue, courtesy of my (then) husband's policy. I will never ever recommend GEICO to anyone. GEICO has one policy - cause they cancelled everybody else's!!!
