Hum Aapke Hain Koun

This was quite sweet in a dated cheesy way, despite the Tragic Demise of one of the main characters. It was also incredibly long, even by Bollywood standards and most of the plot happened in the last 45 minutes. And, to my amusement, it seemed to star pretty much the entire cast of Maine Pyar Kya, including the guy with the pompador mullet, and with a white dog standing in for the pigeon.

Basically, there are two sisters, two brothers, and two male guardians who are best buddies. Guardian of the boys (their uncle) matches up his eldest with his buddy's eldest daughter. If you're interested in watching Hindi weddings, we get about an hour just of the plans, the parties, and the games, including a new one - the women stealing the groom's shoes and holding them for ransom by the groom's father.

Then we get even longer passages of what a happy couple they are and the ceremonies surrounding the birth of their first child. In the meantime, younger daughter and younger son (he looks to be in his mid-20s, and usually acts about 14) are falling in love.

Then happy happy mama trips on her own sari and falls down the stairs, leading to an angsty and badly acted death scene. Younger daughter is offered up as a repacement wife/mother, and decides that it is her duty to say yes...

It's cheesy, it's silly, and it moves like a snail in January, but it's also pretty darned amusing. Lots and lots and LOTS of song numbers to fill out the 3 1/2 hour running time. Worth seeing on a slow day. Available from Netflix, although the disk I had jammed a couple of times, and at least twice during major moments the subtitles stopped.
