The weekend was more productive than many, although not as productive as I hoped.
STAT:
Welcome to the club. Like any large and semi-organized group, it has its usual blend of friendly people, moderately disinterested people, smartasses (friendly) and smartasses (not friendly). The commute wasn't so bad, although there's a certain irony of my driving almost to the gates of Towson U after I had promised myself that I would never commute there again. Well, this time it's not twice a week after work.
I started to work on the masquerade database and was immediately bogged down because it's been a young forever since I worked on a Mac, much less an old mac. Took me a full minute to figure out why tapping the touchpad wasn't opening anything.
Books/AAUW:
Got a visit from
webquatch who knows people who are breaking up a personal library, and have been looking up AAUW booksale info for him. Turns out that in addition to the Gaithersburg branch that I know about/am in contact with via
stratfordbabe there are branches all over Maryland. So if SBabe ever gets tired of hauling infiniate boxes of my books, I might be able to find a more local drop point.
One of my projects for the weekend was making book covers - not just one for mass market paperbacks (mine is too small to handle anything much thicker than a bodice ripper), but for trade paperbacks. Unfortunately, I tried a new way of making them, and have ended up with something too small to fit anything. I should have known better; the previous method wasn't broke, so I shouldn't have tried to fix it. Still, I got practice with...
Poohcifer:
Had an unexpected problem when the foot pedal stopped sending signals to the machine, but that cleared up just as I was going to write the person who sold it to me. I'll be keeping an eye on that.
I have discovered a few more things about Poohcifer that will stand me in good stead in the long run:
- You don't have to use the Brother Bobbin thread
- You do have to check the amount of bobbin thread before you embroider, because if the machine runs out in mid-design it won't stop! It just makes a mess and screws up the design.
- If you're sewing on a naturally heavy fabric, you don't have to use Brother stabilizer (a very stiff, nonwoven fabric.) You can get away with dryer sheets. You might be able to get away with nothing, but I'm leaving in the dryer sheets.
I've also discovered that Embroidery.com has a wealth of usable patterns, including a doll face with a half-smile (wench doll! wench doll!) and a tudor rose. Now I just have to learn how to download them....
Current Book: Easter Disguise
Current Question: Does anyone want me to put my book cover pattern up here? It's not the standard two-pocket design, so it fits a wider range of books.
