A question:

Are you on Netflix? If so, do you like it/feel it's worth the $?

I keep waffling back and forth if I want to join. There's a Blockbuster right near my house, but they're very limited in what they have and it's hard to find. Seems to me that it would be easier to do an electronic search for what I want. (This is why I bookshop in Amazon most of all, despite passing so many bookstores on the way to and from work.) And I get the impression from a comment to my Ella rant that it's possible to bookmark things before they even come out on DVD, so you can mark and forget.

So tell me - is it worth your $240 a year?

I am, and I love it. The reason is simple: I never get to the local video store, and if I do, I don't always have time to watch what I pick up. The advantage of Netflix is the "keep as long as you want" thing, and the "just drop it in the mail" thing. On an average, I'll keep a video about 2 weeks, then will often watch all 3 in one fell swoop.

I'm also using Netflix to watch the stuff I've always wanted to see, but never remember about. My rental queue is currently about 80 disks long, and I add to it constantly. And it's always a bit of an adventure to see what arrives in the mail, because I don't always remember what's coming next. I've seen a lot of things I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise, and am finally catching up on things I've always meant to see. I've used it to do the "Johnny Depp Film Festival" and am currently doing the "David Wenham film festival". Also, seeing things on Netflix will tell me if I want to own them or not.

Is it worth $240/year? It depends on what you think your entertainment is worth. Can you rent things cheaper through Blockbuster? Yeah, probably. Will you? That's where the difference lies for me. I know me well enough to know I won't ever stop at the video store. With Netflix, I don't have to.

I LOVE Netflix. I like being able to put movies in my "queue" and not forget about it when I first learn about it. And I like not feeling 'ripped off' because I finally want to rent an 'old' movie that I always wanted to see.

Plus, I realize it helps me stay in more. On a Thursday night when I'm bored, I just watch one of those movies I have waiting for me at the house. I don't feel compelled to go out and do something so much.

I absolutely adore Netflix. You figure that with current Blockbuster prices you only have to watch 5 movies a month to 'earn' your fee. And there have only been 2 movies that I couldn't find on there thus far, and I watch a LOT of independent and foreign films... if that tells you anything.

I was on Netflix and liked it a great deal when I was going through movies quite a bit. Once I realized I needed to focus more on the writing and didn't have time for the movies, the cable channels became my default movie fix when needed. Plus, I realized that I had bought any number of DVDs that I hadn't watched yet. I figure I shouldn't rent anything else until I've watched everything I own at least once.

But mainly it was the need to work on the book/screenplays.

Netflix is awesome. I especially love using it to catch up on HBO series since I don't have HBO. IMO it is well worth the money -- although to really make it worthwhile you need to rent more than four DVDs a month. But that's usually not a problem.

I use Netflix and have had no complaints so far. I use it mostly for my "interested, but not sure I want to buy the dvd yet" type titles. I don't have a Blockbuster/Hollywood Video nearby and I would have to put anything interesting on hold at the library. Like [livejournal.com profile] jennetj, I enjoy having the leisure of watching it whenever and then sticking it in the mail, rather than rushing it back. I'm a little annoyed the envelope doesn't fit through the outgoing mail slot at the apartment, but that's a minor grumble.

GOD YES.

Better selection + extreme laziness = wonderful idea.
