Sorry about the spam but - does anyone know how long it takes for Adventures in Time and Space to update? There's a screencap from Utopia that I'm desperate to have. Tried asking in one of the comms, but the mod didn't think it was on topic.

Pointers on taking screencaps from .avi files also helpful...

ETA: Thanks for all the advice! I've figured out how to catch it out of VLC. (Gee, this is fun! I might jump on the screencap recap bandwagon.)

You can do caps with VLC, a freeware media player.

Last time I tried that, I couldn't get it to merge down into a static file. There was some setting I had wrong, but I don't know what it was.

Well... I slow down the speed it plays the avi and simply hit pause, then take the cap.

Seconding the VLC option. Also in Windows Media Player, it used to be you could pause the .avi where you needed it and press CTRL+I to save the cap, but reportedly they "fixed" that in version 10 or whatever, so might not work anymore.

I think the default hotkeys for VLC player for screencapping is ALT+CTL+S. You can specify in the settings whether it saves as PNG or JPG and where the screencaps are saved, but it's usually your My Pictures folder.

I'll try that. Print screen was getting me nowhere last time I tried to do this, but this time I'm not trying to crop anything.

What in particular did you want? I've seen caps in a few other places. (For instance, here (http://theharkness.livejournal.com/4895.html#cutid1) and there's someone on OG capping the squee-worthy moments.)

Could you just pause playback (on whatever you're using) and then do a standard capture?

I just tried on my Mac and it works.

(Quirk with my Mac: at some point, some setting got screwed up, and everytime I try to do a screen capture thing, I can't paste it. Instead, I have to find where the computer saved the image as a pdf and open it from within Photoshop and later I can save it as whatever I want. Dunno why it does that. It didn't use to happen, and it's never happened on the PC.)
