And for a complete change of pace, one of the new jokes from the Shakespeare Scum production of "Richard III - Just Misunderstood."

JOEY THE FLUNKY: "Gweetings, Lord of Glow-che-se-shu-seh-sester..."

RICHARD III, DUKE of GLOUCESTER: "It's pronounced Gloh-ster."

JOEY, boggling at the message: That is pronounced Gloh-ster?"

RICHARD: They're all silent letters.

The British have no respect for efforts towards the conservation of letters.

As a former native of Glow-cest-er-shire, I'll have you know I properly respect all efforts to conserve letters unlike those Americans who insist on ditching them at every opportunity !! ^_~

(I stress, I'm joking here... I'm not Anti-American at all...)

As a native speaker of American Southern, I hold firmly to the school of Less Letters, More Syllables.
Except when it suits us to do otherwise, of course.

(Honey, what good are cultural differences if’n we can’t trade some good-natured joshin?)

It's a running joke; nobody gets it right. The Queen calls him "Duke of Gluestick" for the rest of the show.

Reminds me of all the discussion on the proper way to pronounce 'Nottingham' (my home town). If you live elsewhere, its exactly as it seems to be pronounced: 'nott-ing-ham'. But if you live here, you start learning from a very early age how to shorten it to near incomprehensibility- 'not-num' is the usual way to say it :)

That makes sense, says the woman living down the road from "Balmer Marilyn" (Baltimore, Maryland).

*snerk* I <3 Shakespeare humour... (not so much enjoyment of the humours, since I always get black and yellow bile confused, but... :P)
