I'm back, I've had a fabulous time, and I'm going to be spamming y'all with posts and pictures for a bit. There are going to be three main posts about Italy (unless I run afoul of the size limits), and then tonight or tomorrow I'll be typing up the fannish stuff I was working on during the plane ride - the next fic in the Torchwood/SJA crossovers (Computer Security in the "A Question of Jurisdiction" cycle) and a defense of Sarah Jane titled "You were my life": Neither Retcon nor Romance.

*This* post is to ask you to catch me up with everything online. Anything major happening to you I should know about? Interesting articles or links? Any good fan essays, fanfic, (even wank)? Are there new installments on the Ten Doctors or Torchwood Babiez cartoons? Let me know!

Also, if you know of any good scrapbooking software, please let me know. I refuse to go buy all the papers and stickers and stuff - the last thing this house or my budget needs is the detritus of yet another hobby - but if you know of any good software where I can import my pictures, add some pretty stuff, play with my many fonts, and then print out the resulting page, let me know.

And now I'm off to turn all my Yahoogroups back to "mail" and read the 144 messages lurking on AOL...

PS - can anyone explain why iTunes has about 100 versions of "Old Time Rock & Roll" and NONE of them are Seger's?

PPS - cracktastic Donna Drabbles at Lady Mako's place.

PPPS - very darling dancing David Tennant vid on YouTube

Life on Martha are having a ficafest for the Winter Holidays... And LoM are also having a discussion of Martha fic here.

David Tennant has allegedly dumped Sophia Myles by phone - so expect major BP/DT wank !

And I'm finally going to watch the first four eps of SJA this week once the postal strike here is over and the disc arrives from the friend who's recording it...

Damn, really? I'm sorry to hear that. Aside from possible Billie wank, I thought they were a cute couple... and I thought he had a bit more class than that, frankly.

Hee! on the comment below. :D

They're up to four eps? I got that far behind, or are you including Bane?

Um, they're up to ep four of SJA if you've got the CBBC Digital channel available - which the friend who's recording it for me does have...

We wouldn't happen to have any news on SJA box sets, would we? I figure I'll have to buy Brit, but I'd rather buy a box than a la carte.

iTunes may not carry a particular artist. Or, only selections of a particular artist.

For instance, look up "The Beatles". They don't have anything in iTunes because they haven't allowed their catalog to be released on iTunes. Ditto Radiohead. I believe I read that many artists that don't have their work on iTunes do it because they want folks to buy the full album (for various reasons, one often given is that the album is a single work), which goes against iTunes' policy of being able to pick individual songs for purchase.

iTunes doesn't work very well with Linux (at least I've never got it to work), so I never looked at their catalog.

Most of my collection comes from my CDs and records.

I have a large collection of filk cassettes that I'm slowly recording using a portable cassette player and one of my computer inputs. The records (some of which may never show up elsewhere) are slowly being recorded to cd on my stereo system and then ripped to the computer.

Hee hee. I own very few cassettes. I went from owning records right into CDs (my parents are early adopters of technology: I own The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy miniseries on VHS tape, laserdisk, and DVD).

Ever since I started collecting a cappella albums in the early 90s, groups have distributed their work on CD, even the stuff recorded live.

I never really got into cassettes either except homemade ones and the filk cassettes which weren't available in other formats for the longest time. I still have a nice selection of records which I never bothered to replace on CD or which weren't available.

I could afford cassettes when I couldn't afford vinyl, and they were easier to transport.

I can't decide if I want to get the technology to rip to CD and import into iTunes that way, or the technology to import straight to iTunes and then burn CDs from it.

the album is a single work

Yes, but that is also a concept buggered by radio, and yet songs from albums end up on there.

I'm willing to buy albums, and even have from iTunes, but in this case, it would be a case of rebuying what I have on cassette, and I fiercely resent paying twice for things. (Except when I'm buying train tickets to protect bottles of olive oil, but that's a story I have yet to tell.)

Yeah, it's just that attitude that many of the artists take.

It also tends to be artists that don't mind if they get radio play or not (like Radiohead and the Beatles). They have enough of a following that their full albums would be purchased by their fans.

When it comes to more popular music, I've found that the local library is a fantastic source. Most of their music is on CDs and there are many tools out there that can make, essentially, a copy of it for my personal use after I've returned the CD.

Yeah, I admit my first thought on reading the article was that it sounded like a dick move on his part (and my second being that someone is going to feel really bad if Moonlight gets cancelled as quickly as it seems like to), but the point about them being 5000 miles apart and him not having a lot of free time to hop a plane and give her the bad news face-to-face is a major mitigating factor.

And as noted, it may not be true anyway. (And in the RPF talk about David/Billie time nao, has anyone brought up the point that Billie is now apparently engaged or recently married to her current guy, IIRC? I haven't bothered reading the chatter anywhere but in [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj's post on the matter, and at least there it was funny.)

That may be down to the thing where women get more popular after bad things happen to them and "take them down a peg," or else down to even the batchippers being willing to be charitable now that she's no longer "competition" and sympathizing a bit with having had David and now lost him.

It is - but if the only reason to break up is because of the distance, then methinks David can keep it in his pants long enough to wait and see if she ends up staying here for very long.

That said, I'd be a bit surprised if it was true, simply because I think that both of them, being sensible and knowing the vagueries of their career, would have either provisionally broken up before she left or would be waiting to see if she stayed in America for X time before breaking up.

Assuming the breakup rumor is true, it's another big assumption to take the stated reason as being true itself, rather than being the excuse he gave, or the story she gave her friends, or the explanation that was considered to be most suitable for public consumption. If he hooks up with gets seen with someone else dateable in the next couple of months, the tabloid story becomes that he dumped her for this new person.

I had a birthday on the 4th. I'm still celebrating it. There has been much good food since the Monday afore it. I even had some red velvet cake given to me by a total stranger i na Mexican restaurant I <3 mightily.

There was one good rant on writing characters of color that I enjoyed. There ended up being several discussions about fetishisation and "wank" that ensued. That said, I'm a bit less inclined to write ANYBODY fictional since. I've been making icons and read a super cute Dr Who crossover this weekend. It's tiny and gave me grins.

Welcome back! Hope you had a terrific time :) As it happens, my husband's just heading to Italy for a business trip for two weeks (Padova, close to Venice) - at three days' notice. :P We have a friend who lives close to there, so at least he won't be completely alone.

Anyway... I don't tend to follow general fandom comment, debate, wank etc, or news about the actors, so I can't rec anything like that for your reading pleasure. On the other hand, here's a hilarious fic I stumbled across on the Teaspoon, though I know it's also been on LiveJournal: The Unbearable Weirdness of Being Unit. Think Brigadier Bambera, Ancelyn, the Master, the Rani, the Doctor and Donna - plus sundry other characters - and a swordfight. A couple of choice quotes:

Merlin came and he was a weasel in a suit: thin as a rail with hair that defied gravity.

and
“Am I bothered? Look, Brigadier, it’s like this: the planet blew up. The Doctor thought he was the only one left. Then the Master showed up and took over the country when I was on holiday and Martha Jones–some student he travelled with until she left him for being whiny–saved the word. Then he picked me up and we go on a few trips and what happens but your Martian science advisor and her girlfriend yank us out of the vortex thing because she stuck herself in a fob watch and no one told her the war was over. The Doctor explained things, they left, we went to Pompeii–where that idiot got thrown us into gaol and almost covered in lava, I might add–and then you sent us a message on that telegraph. He really should have given you his mobile number.” She paused for a moment, then added: “Oh, right. And supposedly your Martian friend there’s a mad scientist called the Rani. Not that anyone ever bothers to say what a Rani is–or why everyone on his planet seems to be named ‘The.’”.

Just go and read it ;)

And, though I haven't written any more of the Jackie-drabbles you were so kind about, I did write Jackie-in-Boom-Town sort of crackfic: Jackie Tyler's Grand Day Out.

There are a few assorted cracky drabbles at my LJ, and one "bigger" fic (aka it was 14 pgs long in Word but it still fit in one chapter). That bigger fic is one wherein Ten and Rose meet Four and Leela. You can find that one here.

Otherwise, things have been relatively quiet around fandom from what I've seen.

As noted above, some artists just aren't on iTunes for one reason or another. They just got the rights for Jethro Tull's music a few months ago, there's no AC/DC at all, and no Seger to speak of.

That said... Russ found me a bunch of Seger on the torrents, including the original single release of "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," which is much rawer and cooler than the live version that he released later. Drop me a line if there's anything special you'd like.
