Worked out the bills and was all ready to post "...and I bought my ticket to ChicagoTARDIS!"

And then I went upstairs to check something, and heard the air conditioning unit making a grinding noise it is not supposed to make. So tomorrow I call the A/C guy to see if he still makes offseason house calls (I hope so. It hit 80 degrees yesterday.)

If I get to ChiTARDIS at all, it's going to be because I started driving on Thursday instead of eating myself into a coma and start driving back halfway through Saturday. This concept is not entirely out of the running. Deciding not to go is one thing; feeling that it's being taken from me makes me stubborn.

Gah, that sucks. I'm resigned to seeing how far north I can get Thursday evening and then arriving in the middle of the day on Friday (and planning on heading out to my grandparents' on Wednesday to make up for Thursday's early departure), but I decided it was worth taking three vacation days the following week to be able to spend Monday and Tuesday driving from Chicago to Houston (and then from Houston back up to Dallas) and then have Wednesday off to unpack and generally chill.

After Italy I don't have any time left - M's even taking off so she can babysit the A/C guy when he comes.

There's a train that would take the stress off driving and would allow me to arrive earlier and leave a little later, but then I have to get from the train station to the con.

I'll know Friday, when the A/C is done. I'm so sorry for going "Yes!" "No!" "Maybe!" "Perhaps!" to you regarding the room.

I continue to be flabbergasted by how much time off this job gives me -- largely because I'm used to only holding down the same job a year or two, and hence not having things accumulate and earning more time per year as I go along. So this year I've had a full three weeks of vacation and personal, and been able to scatter a few days here for this con or that and still expect a decent stretch at Xmas.

Next year, though... Well, but last year I probably had fewer days off to start with, when I went using up a week and a half on that trip with the [livejournal.com profile] goddes. Still, I'd really like to wheedle her into visiting Ireland in October rather than early spring, and not just because I'll have had longer to save up...

But, yeah. I've definitely had a few cons where I did things like postponing plane tickets or hotel reservations till the last minute because I was so unsure if I was going or not, so I really understand where you're coming from. (And regarding the train station, I'd offer a ride if I weren't so unsure about when I'll be arriving Friday. I might could offer a ride from con to train when you leave, depending. I also might suggest consulting with [livejournal.com profile] researchgrrrl, who lives in Chicago and is going to know a bit more about transportation options. Tell her I sent you to ask her about it. Wait, never mind, you have [livejournal.com profile] taraljc friended, and IIRC she's involved with the con and should really know about transportation.)
