Date: 2007-11-29 02:03 am (UTC)We had a weird hiccup with one set of bills Sunday night--normal volume is 400, but add a holiday weekend in there and it jumped to 1100. The first part of the job--creating records of the bills in the accounts receivable system--ran fine, but when it came time to update our tables with that information, a job that normally runs well after this one kicked in and shut everything down. So we had about 950 records that A/R showed billed, but we had no record for this.
I found out about this Monday evening en route to Omaha. The guy up here, who while he doesn't mean to do it tends to disregard everything I say until his butt's raked over the coals, called me in a panic. I was able to shut the nightly procedure down (which meant we wouldn't double-bill those cars) and told him I'd look at it tomorrow.
What he didn't know--but I did, because I am the Wise Old Fart--is that I could use that A/R data to apply the billing info to our tables. So I made a few noises on Tuesday, set to work and adapted one of my little Java programs to take care of it. Had it done in two hours. But while I was at it I flagged the records in question, because I knew what was coming.
Sure enough, the guy came up to me today. "Is there any way you can print those bills?" he asked. Well...again, I had a process ready to go, but taking my cue from Mr. Scott, I didn't show my cards immediately.
"That would depend," I told him. "How are my chances at promotion looking at the moment?"
He blinked a few times, not sure if I was serious or not. Meanwhile, the guy across from me, who is ostensibly my boss but we both report to the guy in question, is all but wetting himself from laughter. I finally told him I had it covered and again, in two hours I had it ready to go.
The other problem I don't want to get into because it tends to raise my blood pressure. :)
