Fic rec: The title says it all: Sullivan and Jones, Medical Mysteries Our Specialty Rated R, so don't read at work.

Recipe Request: I succumbed and bought a half-pound of smoked pork neck at the Amish market and now don't have the faintest idea what in heck to do with it. Please post your favorite corn chowder or baked potato soup recipes.

I see that LJ has added little orange flags so that trolls who want to make trouble can click on posts for being "offensive." Countdown to this being used to harass the other side in a fan war in 5... 4... 3...

And yet, based on a Post article today, 6Apart is still doing better than FaceBook or MySpace, which have decided to turn all their members into unpaid endorsers by flashing up news announcements of everything else they're doing/seeing/buying on the web. One guy's Christmas surprise wasn't much anymore when right after he bought a ring, FaceBook told all his readers exactly what he had bought and where. (And we won't even go into what it probably did to his marriage when his wife asked him why he was buying jewelry and he was all "what jewelry?")

THAT is seriously friggin' creepy!

OH, DUDE. 6A has a deal with Facebook on that too. I get all my details off [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]. You have to mark in your userinfo that you don't want Facebook posting when you update your LJ.

Aha! Found a link!

That really is a useful comm to join, BTW. Stupid typos. Sorry for the multiple edits.

Wait, they're posting crap on Facebook if you don't even have a Facebook account?

Hmm, I was on my settings flagging my own journal earlier and spotted the Facebook thing, but I didn't know what it was supposed to do and it wasn't clicked -- presumably because I don't have a Facebook account -- so I scrolled right down without thinking any more about it.

No, you have to have a Facebook account.

Facebook caved to public pressure (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20071130/facebook-about-face/), and Beacon is now opt-in rather than opt-out.

There are days when I'm glad I'm an Omega I never joined Facebook or MySpace.

That's what the Post said, but that they thought that would not raise China's worth of red flags says someone out there is profoundly stupid.

Reason #452791 why I wouldn't touch Myspace or Facebook with a 10-foot modem cord.

Smoked pork? Cube it and put it into lentil soup, about half an hour after you've started to cook the lentils.

You'll need:

1 lb fresh green beans (washed and snapped)
4 tbs olive oil
2 garlic cloves, chopped fine
1/4 cup chopped smoked pork
1 sauce pan big enough for a pound of green beans, plus lid (preferably glass)
1 pair of serving tongs

Warm the olive oil in the pan. Add the smoked pork and cook until the edges are just browning. Add the garlic. Let sit for a bit to get the garlic flavor into the oil. Add green beans. Use the serving tongs to get all of the green beans coated in the oil. Use the tongs to flip the beans until they start to brown just slightly. Cover the pan. Allow to steam in the pan until beans are bright green. Voila! Bacon and garlic green beans. Crunchy, greasy, and surprisingly healthy.

Such a tiny little flag is going to cause so much wank :( I didn't know about that facebook thing, that's just scary.

I'm sure that vigilante group is already going through Pornish Pixies and clicking on every post.

There was a discussion in another friend's post on the flagging function in which someone was suggesting going hogwild with the flagger to clog up the moderation queue with ridiculous complaints, and someone else raised the hope that the Moral Majority idiots might save us the trouble of doing so. Given that it was also pointed out that people who make a lot of unjustified flags are going to have their own flags no longer counted towards the quota for sending a thing to the moderation queue, I think it's a good thing if they shoot themselves in the feet straight off.

The FAQs for it are rubbish too. I'm going to have to submit a support request because as a mod, I have a ton of queries.

I have been seriously amused by the number of people who are protesting by flagging the announcement post as offensive. If that doesn't make the point, nothing will!

The flags make no sense to me whatsoever. They serve no purpose but to be negative, and who needs that?

I personally would use that pork neck for split pea soup. Mmm. Maybe I'll make some this weekend with the chicken stock I made a few days ago.
