When I first came up with the idea of the Dickens Tea, I was thinking of pretty much copying the old costumer's Dickens party - victorian parlor games, a costume contest, and decorating party. Plus, naturally, dancing and food. Probably at a local mill. It would have required a lot of financial outlay and workers to run, and I didn't want to have a raffle because I didn't think people would be willing to spend money on tickets so close to Christmas, not without the guarantee of getting something for their money.

When Dory took it over, she relocated it to the Reynolds Tavern in Annapolis, which already does high teas, and instituted a small silent auction. They were brilliant moves. No financial outlay up front, the Tavern did the cooking and cleaning, and people could bid specifically on what they wanted at the auction without "losing" money if they were outbid. Entertainment was [livejournal.com profile] faireraven on the violin and an interactive reading of A Christmas Carol, and there was a representative of the Heart Association there to make a little speech.

It was a charming and pleasant afternoon - and a successful one, as the rough number for the donation to the Heart Assn is $800!

WHOO!

Ideas are already being kicked around for 2008's tea.

No Sunday 7 today - it's been too busy a week - but I do have another lesson in Why It's Good To Poke Through Your Stuff Regularly. Deciding that I needed to use a plastic tub in the basement for something else, I opened it for the first time in over a year... and discovered a large set of beautiful fat-quarter cotton quilting squares - some with metallic patterns, others in a stained glass design.

Or as I currently think of it, I just discovered a big free set of furoshiki cloths.
