bana05? LJ/AOL's latest game of silly buggers is to give me a "you have a response to your comment" message that's completely blank. Would love to continue a conversation, but have no idea where it is or what it's about...

Sarah Jane had the longest run of any old school companion (unless you count both Romanas as one character, which, technically, they are.) The crossover companion from Three to Four, she was basically the Plucky Edumacated One whose character was a fairly direct ripoff of Lois Lane - just plucky enough to get into trouble and help a little bit; just clueless enough to get in over her head and need the hero to save her.
She had the usual bouts of screaming and whining, but she also got her due number of saving-the-day moments, and there was something about her that just really clicked with the audience and her co-stars, especially as she was working with Tom Baker. Canonically the only companion the Doctor repeatedly referred to as "my best friend," Sarah Jane has ranked high in Favorite Companion polls since her appearance, usually only rousted out of the number 1 spot when the flavor of the month is at its most popular. (I'd have to go back and see if I can find the buggers, but IIRC, only Ace and Rose have kept her out of the top spot for long.)
There was an attempt to use her popularity and that of K-9's to do a spinoff. It was dire. It was, however, the first time the two characters were put together, as K-9 came well after her run on Team TARDIS, and introduced the concept that at least for Sarah Jane, the Doctor was popping back up to keep an eye on her and give her presents. The only other companion to get *that* was Jo, and her present turned evil (Planet of the Spiders). So another notch on Sarah Jane's belt.
And then came New Who, and she got reimagined and updated. Some fans are pretty unhappy that School Reunion showed her as lovelorn and lonely since the Doctor dropped her in Aberdeen by accident, although I persist in retconning that as a fairly normal human reaction to losing a life she adored and best friend at the same time. Sarah Jane was always a bit of an adrenaline junkie.
In the SJA, she is the Doctor. Not Doctor-like or even Doctor-lite, she IS the Doctor. She has a sonic tool, builds whacky machines, has a deus-ex-machine in the attic, rebuffs alien invasions, recruits underaged helpers, and disdains violence... although she's real damn good at blowing up things if she has to be. (That last must be the Brigadier's influence.)
sarahjane_fic is the best place to go looking for recs for her best classic adventures. I've always had a soft spot for Brain of Morbius, but then, I have a documented lack of taste. Seeds of Doom is a perennial favorite, and then there's Ark in Space, which has the infamous bubblewrap monster (and a less infamous moment when Tom Baker flashes her knickers at the camera. Tom and Lis got along spendidly, and he liked to use his superior size to sling her around the set.)
Oh, and Big Finish has a spinoff audio series with her, but I treat it as an alternate universe, because there's no way in this one, especially with UNIT's backing, that she would ever have to be on the run.
:) no problem. What kinds of things you'd like to see (other than the appearance with Jack and secksing!); any sort of plot you'd like? SJA-verse, DW-verse during the classic era? "School Reunion", but pre-SJA-verse?
My personal favorites are Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane and Lost Boy, the last two of the series, but you can pick up anything you need to know from Invasion of the Bane.

Date: 2007-12-12 02:59 am (UTC)SJA-verse, I think, because that tidily allows for Martha and the Doctor to both show up, not to mention Jack.
