TorchWoot!

Torchwood was a big old honkin' cheesetray of all the delights I hoped for: innuendo, action, humor, character development.

Please note that "deep, meaningful or even holds-up-to-scrutiny plot" is not on the wishlist. And a good thing, that.

Ianto gets more than 2 lines! So does Tosh! The team is finally both a team and competent, while the show itself is no longer taking itself too seriously (and quite right too!) And John and James work beautifully together - I do hope that the season doesn't end up doing anything too fatal to "Captain John" because he'd be a fabulous addition to the show.

The only thing I'm bumming about is that BBC hasn't unlocked the Torchwood website to the world yet. They locked the Twood site and the SJA site until those shows premiered, so I assumed that this would be the same - unlocked on opening night.

It wasn't as awful as I thought it would be, which from my perspective is a good thing ;) Owen and Gwen didn't annoy me as much as they did last year, either. You can keep the other Time Agent and his ridiculous outfit, though.

I hope they carry on putting Jack under pressure about his past and his secretive habits - I liked that. And I also found it interesting that, having chosen to come back for his team, he finds them more or less coping pretty well without him, and not welcoming him with such open arms as he might have imagined. Consequences, consequences :)

I found the entire episode to be summed up brilliantly by the elderly woman and her comment of 'Bloody Torchwood!'. It was all so silly, but at least we didn't get Owen being a raping bastard, and Gwen impressed me this time round.

I found [livejournal.com profile] calapine summed it up beautifully - they've stopped going for deep and gritty and gone for complete crack instead!

Torchwood yayz!

Parenthetically, I saw the other day that you were talking about A Tangled Skein in Hyattsville and how they were having some sort of sit & knit event on Wednesday; did you happen to be there yesterday in the sort of 6pm time frame? If so -- or even if not, really, but less relevantly [g] -- that was me popping in to return a skein of extra yarn and then dash out again. Hi! :-)

I didn't show up until 7ish, so I missed you. Maybe next week!

SO... for someone who has not seen season/series 1 of TW...(Having been put off by some of the descriptions she found of episodes wherein team members use alien tech to get easy pieces of... and kill people so they can USE other pieces of alien tech, and all that...)
Would you recommend just starting with this Season/series now? Or should I bite my lip and find some way to see the first season, first?

Start with last season's "Captain Jack" episode merely because it was an excellent one. Then skip to this season.

If you can get BBC America, they are showing a mini marathon of Torchwood, starting at 12 noon CST and going until 7pm. Captain Jack starts at 5pm with the End of Days at 6pm.

You might want to check out the pilot, too, since it wasn't too terrible and it sets things up. "Out of Time" was well-respected, and "They Keep Killing Suzie" had its good points.

I haven't heard a peep from the Usual Sources. I'm not sure they're doing them this year.

ah - not yet.

BBC - Press Office - Network TV Programme Information Week 3 Unplaced 2008:
There is a specially edited pre-watershed repeat of Torchwood on BBC Two later in the week.

Following on from that, Torchwood Declassified goes exclusively backstage to reveal the secrets behind some of the first episode's sensational stunt sequences and talks to John Barrowman, James Marsters and Russell T Davies.
