It's been all so very thrilling to have people call me and tell me about how I've won things from entry cards at the home show. And I even did fill out a couple for a lark.

However, I don't care how reputable you say your company is or how many big names it drops as part of the fabulous vacation and cruise I've just "won," I am not whipping out the Visa and handing you a "low, low" payment of "just" $300 in order to claim my fabulous prize. Prizes involve you giving things to me, not the other way around.

how stupid do they think people are? well, obviously some people DO meet their expectation or they wouldn't still be pulling that crap.

Two in one week is a bit much to deal with. And the second pitch was so good, I was almost all "You should have heard the idiot who tried to rip me off earlier!"... and then he mentioned the "low payment of two ninety-nine" that somehow couldn't wait until I had anything official in my hands.

I wonder how many people don't promptly ask where the decimal is in the "two ninety nine."

That reminds me of the Neilsen-Hayden dictum: "Money flows from the publisher to the author, not the other way around." And really, it's the same sort of scam, isn't it?

Fabulous prizes should not have to involve sitting through a sales pitch where they just about force you to stay whether you take the tiny prize you actually get either.

The first pitch was both, if you'd believe it - they wanted $70 over the phone that would (supposedly) be refunded when I showed up for a 90-minute pitch and *then* they'd discuss how I could cash in my vacation!
