On Writing

This was supposed to be the flist linkarama, but... not quite. A tangential discussion on writing instead.
raqs linked me to
ozarque's On Writing Science Fiction post, which is a series of possible first sentences for a story all dealing with the same image. I have a few opinions about first lines. And I've always wanted to run a writing exercise with a picture of a computer (turned off) on an empty desk, next to a window.
Because y'all, there's *plenty* of potential there. And it's really cool to watch an idea develop.
Romance: His latest email, heartfelt and longing, was waiting for her.
Science Fiction: Such a simple form of communication - silent black text on a white screen - and yet it was the best way of talking across the greatest of distances.
Horror: Even the distance between the living and the dead.
Speaking of horror,
cesario is suggesting a new writing contest: YAVNC. Short for Young Adult Vampire Novel Contest. Plot requirements:
* The main romantic pairing is between a vampire and a human.
* They're both teenagers (or look like teenagers, were "turned" as teenagers, etc)
* Bonus points if the human has a name with a stunningly obvious meaning.
* ...or is just starting a new school in a new town
* ...and has a number of "endearing" flaws.
My review for Flesh and Bone is up on Reviewing the Evidence *sigh* I read these things out loud before I turn them in; how did I miss that mistake in the last paragraph?
A quick fangirl giggle: Oh, so true!
And now, must go to bed. Brains leaked out ages ago. Tasty, tasty braaaaaaiiiiiins.

Date: 2008-05-19 02:54 am (UTC)Thank heaven for snarky fangirls. The whole mind-boggling Twilight phenomenon is far less headdesky with this sort of thing going on. I think I would have had to set those books on fire even when I was a teenager...
