Despite the fact that the world's stupidest idea involves trying to learn a new technique on a Sunday of a con when you haven't had any lunch and you're trying to talk to someone you've just met and are trying to impress, the diamond-in-the-square "convention project" knitting pattern proceeds apace. Fortunately, I can knit and read, so I can get that reaction back to you, [livejournal.com profile] suricattus.

I need finish the first block so I can apply lessons learned to the second, and then I think I'm going to be ready to actually have coherent instructions. The pattern is a garter-knitted version of the quilt block "square in the diamond" and doing it will include: simple provisional cast on, simple chained edge, picking up stitches, simple decrease on the pickup, and simple-as-I-can-make-it directions for knitting in your ends as you go so there's no weaving in later, just trimming ends.

The cast and edging techniques are going to be the ones eventually used in $600 of Therapy and a Free Afghan, so you get a chance to beta read for free read 'em in advance.

ETA: The easy way of doing both "I don't know how to knit" and "just joining" is going to be a pair of LJ cuts, I think.

For an experienced knitter, it's dead simple... well an edited version, anyway.

Cast on 20 st.
Knit 20 garter rows, bind off.
Pick up in a contrasting color on each side; k2t second two stitches of every row until you run out of stitches. You now have a diamond in a square.
Go back to original color; pick up stitches along one side of square. Knit 6-row border. Bind and turn log-cabin style until there is a border all the way around.

There's more to it than that, but that's the basics. The reason it's a good con project is that the initial caston is the last time you have to count over 6, and almost the last time you have to count at all, as you can start eyeballing the border.
