That thing where I said I'd do a poll a week? I lied. I listened to two episodes of Dragon Page while commuting and, based on [livejournal.com profile] omahastar, an episode of Slice of Sci-Fi while pulling [livejournal.com profile] soniclipstick together.

It turns out that both podcasts are run by the same people, using the same format. It's just that Dragon Page focuses more on sci-fi literature (in all formats) and Slice of Sci-Fi focuses more on visual media. Both are available from their web pages or American iTunes.

They also both have the same strengths and weaknesses. Running at an average of 40 minutes, they include commentary by the DJs (for Dragon Page this included royalties on Kindle books and discussion of ebook formats; for Slice it included earthquake-sensing technology, the copyright fight over Lassie Come Home, and the server crashes over Dr. Horrible). They both had reviews for books, podiobooks, and movies, depending on the 'cast. Slice had a "name the movie quote" trivia contest. Dragon had phone-in book reviews. Both had fairly in-depth interviews (Dragon's was Peter David; Slice's was Robert Picardo.)

Dragon won major snark points from me during the conversation about ebook formats, and the argument that we should just pick one and stick to it. "How many times have you bought the White Album? However, to show solidarity to technology, our next podcast will be distributed on Eddison cylinder."

The weakness was that at 40 minutes they went on and on and on roughly 15 to 20 minutes longer than my attention span. And while both were comprehensive and I'd recommend them to anyone who wants to keep their finger on the pulse of SF (get both to cover everything) you've really got to be in the mood for a long talk-radio style show.

New poll below. There is no "Jane Austen" option because I've been looking and all I can find is people reading her books, and I already own my favorites on CD. Voting at least until tomorrow night; probably until Wednesday night.

[Poll #1231285]

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] lefaym applies the Bechdel Test to New Who, episode by episode. Interesting analysis
