I want to join the Ravelympics, in Team TARDIS but I have no idea how.

Anyone want to give me a very basic "Ravelry 101" tutorial? The whole posting projects etc. isn't intuitive.

Ooh! Ooh! I'm new too, but I'm also crocheting for Team TARDIS.

What's you're Ravelry Name? I'll help as much as I can. :)

Same as this one, neadods. I am *clueless.*

Here's what I know.

I'm not a part of the Ravelympics, but a quick search on Ravelry pointed me to their group:

http://www.ravelry.com/groups/ravelympics-2008

Join that. (Click "Join this group" in the right hand corner--all action buttons are always up here, usually in that space, no matter the screen) And from there, I found the FAQ:

http://www.ravelry.com/groups/ravelympics-2008/pages/Events-FAQs-and-How-Tos

And when that doesn't help, you can also ask the Moderators of the Ravelympics for assistance, especially for Team TARDIS: http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/ravelympics-2008/topics/256430#1

For project tagging, when you add or edit a project in Ravelry, you have the opportunity to add tags for searchability. I'll use my first project on my projects list as an example. (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/imjustlori/basic-sock-recipe)
In project info, the *last* thing you can do is add tags. For this sock, I've got the following: "basic" "knitting" "socks" "harnharlot". I have these because I've used the basic pattern created by the Yarn Harlot. To add these, I clicked "edit project details" in the upper right of the project's page, went to the tags text box, and...ha! And I see Casey's been doing his awesome thing again. When you are editing a project, there is a *new* little button to the right of the tags text box. The popup for it says "Add Ravelympics tag to your project". So I'm guessing you just have to click that to mark it as a project for the event. *grin*

Not being a part of the event, I don't know what else to coach on, but this should help get you started. *grin* Good luck!

The ravelympics tag list is reached by the little r in a circle. You want the name of the event, any team you want to join and the ravelympics2008 tag.

If you're joining TeamTARDIS, you'll want to post in that thread (though the tag is really how they're tracking it) and the team captain has asked for a tag with your ravelry name, for easier tracking. Which I still have to do.

To add a project in the first place:

1. Go to your notebook (first tab)
2. On the left-side list, click "Projects"
3. Once the projects page is displayed (probably with nothing in it if you haven't done this yet), click the "add new project" button in the upper left of the projects page (this is immediately next to the left-side list)
4. Add project details. You can always go back and edit if you don't have all the information at hand. There's also a way to point it to yarn you have in your stash, if you've listed it already.
5. DO NOT FORGET TO CLICK SAVE.

Basically, you add to your notebook like that for ALL the fields -- projects, queue, stash. For queue, friends, and favs, there are little 'add to' buttons on pattern, people and project pages. It's fairly standard, once you figure out the first step.

I also have a bookmarklet that allows me to add to my queue whenever I find an online project off Ravelry.

I've been building my projects list, although right now I'm limiting it to things currently on needles. Everything else is subject to change.

The site can be what you make of it. I'm not going to add my stash--ever--but as I start and finish projects this is a great place to document it, so I can see exactly how many pairs of Fetching I've made, for example.

And when waiting for Woolmeise the Loopy Ewe F5 thread was a fun place to hang out, too. *grin*

Yeah, I basically use mine for keeping track of current and completed projects, adding project ideas to my queue, and keeping track of yarn stash. (Which comes in damned handy when I'm shopping from work and need that visual reminder of just how many skeins of sock yarn I already have in blue/purple/pink colorways...)

Maybe the Ravelympics would be a good thing for me to knock that Tam of Rassilon out for. Or to finish my Scotch Thistle stole...

Okay, I just put myself on Team TARDIS for the Hatdash (because I need to make that Tam of Rassilon and it's just such an obvious cause) and a couple of lace WIPs to Wrestle.

Two events? You're ambitious. I'm going to do a scarf; forget what that's called.

Considering how many names on the list were down for two events, I'm not alone. (Though I did have an attack of sanity and decide to only designate one lace project as a WIP to wrestle.) But a hat is just about a "weekend project," requiring very little time to complete, and the Scotch Thistle stole is basically what I had about decided to pick back up and focus on finishing once I get these German stockings out of the way. And unless I totally blow off knitting on my stocking tonight and tomorrow night, I should be finishing it over the weekend, which gets it off my plate at about the right point to also be casting on for the Tam of Rassilon and putting some more rows onto the stole.

I figure the scarf is just enough to get done without soaking up all the time I'll be on Ravelry talking about it. :>

Ravelry ate up a lot of time when I was new to it, and it's still a lot of fun to hang out on when I'm doing something like trying to narrow down my next project, or match a pattern to the yarn in my stash I'm trying to use up (or pick the right yarn for the pattern I want to do). But mostly it's now just part of the Sunday night pics-posting routine, to update the project photos and the progress bars on the various things I've worked on over the week before I shift gears to LJ for the weekly progress pics post. Oh, and occasionally to have stash pictures to add for a recent yarn purchase. I'm so bad about looking at all the forums I'm supposedly a member of that I didn't know about a fellow SnBer's party tomorrow night until people mentioned it at SnB last Sunday.

Definitely check out the official thread for Team TARDIS on the Ravelympics forum (http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/ravelympics-2008/256430/1-25), because the first post in that has a lot of very good information.

You will need to respond to that list to let our Team Captain know that you want to become a companion and to which events you are signing up for. Also there is information on what tags to use for your project in order to get it recognized by Ravelry and on the official list for Team TARDIS.

And then you can socialize in the unofficial thread for Team TARDIS (http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/who-knits/256546) on the Who Knits forum. Whee!

Welcome aboard.

I have to figure out what I'm doing first. I want to pick something I can actually finish - while not letting the house fall to wrack and ruin!

Hee hee! I know the feeling. I wasn't expecting to get involved until the right fiber landed in my lap: 4oz of BFL from a friend in a colorway called "Roses in the Dark". I snatched it up and am spinning it to make Rose's Wristwarmers. I figure that project is nice and quick enough for me not to go insane. Hee!

I know I've overcommitted myself there's no way I'll complete a shawl and a pair of socks, though I've finally given in and switched my wipwrestling project from a scarf that's only half done to a shawl, which only needs about half the top border to be complete.

And I still haven't come up with a pattern for the shawl I want to knit. I've two lace books coming from the Interweave Press hurt books sale, so I'm hoping that they arrive in time and one of them will have something.

I'm doing the Bad Cat hyacinth shawl and it's working up relatively quickly, although I'm making a point to only do one repeat at a time to keep myself fresh.

But not for the Olympics challenge. I want to knit up a swatch of a simple design and see how it looks before I declare it my piece.

*bounce* I'll look out for you.

I'll be home after 8pm and I'll pop onto ravelry, so you can pm me if you have difficulties with getting your projects up.

If nothing else this has meant that I've actually added some of my stash, my needles and a few projects.

I am beginning to fear knitting. It appears to be even more obsessive-compulsive than fandom.....

It intersects with fandom in many ways - after all, you can knit while watching, and you can often knit things from the show!
