Has anyone used Lowes' paint-matching service? Because yesterday I went to a private home decorating store to get the paint for my bedroom (I'm matching a bowl, remember) and was sent home with a bunch of non-matching paint chips and told "that's what your choices are."

When I said that I was willing to get a custom mix of paint, the response was a sniffed "All our paints are custom."

No, dear. All your paints come from a different big manufacturer than the other big manufacturers sold at other stores. It's really not the same thing, and "that's what you get" = "I don't get your business."

Ooo, lame. Home depot has a machine that you can use to scan your colored object and get a match...supposedly. I haven't tried it because I've been able to match stuff from their Behr brand chip display without using the thingy.

lowes has exactly that and that's exactly who we went to for our living room paints.

whomever was behind the counter was being either an idiot or an asshole. the lowes by us (Sterling, VA) was fantastic (in terms of polite and "yeah, we can do that too, no problem").

& Home Depot always has the edge for me because of their
Olympic support (yeah, nothing to do with the fact that
the color machine works wonders....).

I know someone who works for a Home Depot in upstate New York and they really do that custom-mixing thing. No idea about Lowe's.

I used Home Depot's paint matching service when I first moved into this apartment (though I had to convince them I knew what I was talking about when I told them what I wanted them to do to make it lighter) and it worked just fine.

There's no Lowes here, so I've had no experience with them.

I've never bought paint at Lowe's, but Home Depot will match whatever they can scan. Plus, they lightened paint for me for free, when I took the can home and it didn't look like I thought it would.

I've used Home Depot's service, and it's pretty good. Last time we repainted Little Tree's room, she found a picture with a color she liked, and we took that in to match. They mixed up a color that matched it perfectly.

Wow. Okay, they think you don't know what you're doing. They're certainly going to learn better. Twits.

That's lame. I've seen paint mixing machines at Walmart.

I've used the Lowe's paint matcher. And it's great for matching *stuff*. Not so great for trying to match paint you've bought previously that's been sitting in a shed for a year and has had the paint info scrapped off.

Okay, that's it. I am now forced to defriend you.

Unless of course you forgo the dark side and head over to Sherwin-Williams, employer of my father for 40 years and provider of my college education, and have THEM help you. :)

I take the previous comment back, because it turns out there's an S-W very close to me, according to mapquest, on a stretch of road I don't drive often. Will check out tomorrow after work.

I've gone to Lowe's for my paints, but I think next time I'll be going to Sherwin-Williams, because the paint doesn't seem to be good quality--it took several coats to do a decent job on my walls.

The system that most of those places have worked quite well for me a number years back. Unfortunately, that was Hechingers (though you *know* computers and scanners have improved over the years, so Home Depot/Lowes should be good). LOL actually it worked so well that one of the employees was being lazy and scanning the store's paintchips to mix up the colors, rather than keying them in (though he *did* show that the correct numbers came up when the one customer asked).

Sounds like you were "waited on" by an idiot at that shop. One who hadn't a clue what "custom mix" really meant. (or color matched... heck, look how long textile people have been doing the job.. without the computer.. there's no excuse for idiocy).

I was being waited on by someone who, I think, normally sells wallpaper.

They should still have a clue if they're working in anything resembling interior decorating - after all, people need to paint the woodwork around the wallpaper - ideally in something maybe not white that goes with the paper.
