[livejournal.com profile] lizbee is running the Whovian Cliche-Swap Ficathon. Minimum 500 words; sign up to write one set of characters living out the cliches for another set of characters. In other words - Nyssa got dumped off in Aberdeen and is pissed about it. The Doctor rips open the universes to be with Adric. Jamie needs a diary to keep track of how often (and when) the Doctor pops back into his life. Romana is stuck on Earth with a burned out time ring and runs Torchwood. (Oh, PLEASE, somebody write that one!) The Doctor pledges to spend the rest of his lives with the Mas - oh, wait, that's canon.

If there's something you're sick of seeing in fanfic, shuffle the players and try again.

This is something cheerful after Bouchercon, which is proving a bit of a disappointment. Oh, the panels are good (presumably including the one I fell asleep in - NOT their fault; I've been doing 10-hour days to take the time off without taking leave). But the frills aren't there. The dealer's room is small. There aren't any clever or fun giveaways. And the swap table is nonexistent. Seriously. When I last looked at it, it contained 4 empty drinks and someone had written a note on the sign.

Naturally, the swap table was the one thing I've been talking about for ages.

Oh, and I got charged double on the parking from what I expected.

Tomorrow is a real dilemma. There's one panel I really, REALLY want to see. With an author whose work I love (Julia Spencer-Fleming) whom I will not get a chance to see again. (She doesn't do Malice, and this is her last panel.) But if I go, I'm going to take a bath on parking again, and I can't ameloriate it with a trip to the Book Thing until Saturday because they're not open on Friday. Is it worth the parking just to see one person? But is it worth passing up the panel I most want to see?

Ha!

Also, Romana running Torchwood would rock.

If you do go, tell Julia that Sue Classic from unrest says hi.

It is worth the parking to see one person on the panel you most want to see. We only walk this way once.

My mom and I went to Bouchercon many years ago and got to see Maxwell Grant, aka Walter B. Gibson, before he died. He did little magic tricks and was a wonderful speaker, then later on he signed my hardcover Shadow book! I wish I could find that damned book, but at least I have the memory of seeing that crazy, wonderful little round man.

It's a religion in mysteries panel - not your average topic - and I think she handles it perfectly. (I think she handles a lot perfectly - at some point when I scrape the brain cells together, I'll be doing a Critic's Eye for her.)

Go to Bouchercon and see her. It's worth the cash.
