I have been working for some time under the assumption that I have to do something about my shower because the pan has been leaking.

After several tests run today by me, my father, and assorted buckets of water, we have determined that the inside of the shower is watertight after all. It may still be fugly, but it doesn't *have* to be replaced, and that means that I don't *have* to spend $3,000-5,000 replacing it.

Which means several major things regarding the bathroom renovation:

1) I can afford to do it. Without that gigantic expense, the entire rest of the job will cost ~1,500. Less if I shop carefully.

2) I can do it in affordable chunks: the shower bar with one paycheck, the shower door with the next, the paint with the next, etc.

3) I can get it done and dusted by spring.

Whoo-hoo!

Also, went to a home show today. Last time I went to one, it was packed solid. This year, at least 1/3 of the vendors weren't there and the crowd was incredibly sparse. One guy whose company normally did roofing and gutters only said he'd opened up a sideline of handyman stuff, no job too small, because that was where he was getting all the work these days.

But of your shower pan isn't leaking, then where would the water I assume you've been seeing be coming from? That seems like an important thing to figure out!

There's a lip at the front of the shower; a tiled area raised about 6". I thought the water was coming through on the shower side of that barrier; it appears that it is instead running through a crack on the bathroom side of that barrier. (We poured water through the shower drain, then stopped up the drain and poured water an inch deep all over the shower stall - and let it sit. No leaks. And judging from the not-too-waterstained underflooring and insulation, Dad doesn't think that the leak is as bad as I'd worried anyway.

Replacing the flimsy shower curtain with a frosted glass door will serve the dual purpose of blocking the chances of water getting onto the bathroom floor *and* blocking the view of that fug shower stall unless I'm in it.

Cool! I'll give him a call after Christmas... first thing up, the shower bar. I don't want a door in the way of the plumber.
