File under "Life is unfair" - I went to bed early so I wouldn't be tired all day, and ended up waking up in the middle of the night. For two hours. I just can't win for losing right now.

No news is supposed to be good news regarding my father. I'll be calling in again after work.

I have resolved into a dew to see Hamlet regardless: Britain's most prestigious players doing England's greatest play is hardly going to be a bad night on the town regardless of my preference for the comedies. If I repeat the mantra enough, I may even feel the truth of it.

I do feel the truth of this statement: If I come back having seen five of the six actors I went to see perform, then I have nothing to complain about.

However, in the "shallow Nea is still shallow" department, I have to confess that if he isn't back in time for me to see, I hope he doesn't come back at all for the run. (Considering that healing properly is THE most important thing so we all have a chance to see him another time, I rather doubt he will be back.) But it would really gut me to find out that he'd returned to the stage just as I returned to America, or worse, while I was still in the town but not in the theater.

I hope you have some good news about your dad, at least.

And Bleh on the waking - I hate that kind of thing!

I hope you get all your wishes this Christmas - including David Tennant on stage.

I hate waking up like that. It throws me for the rest of the day. Here's hoping for excellent news re your dad - and as you say, no news at this point most likely translates to "he had a quiet restful night" and that is always helpful post surgery. Will continue thinking good thoughts.

Speaking of surgery - tell 'Shallow Nea is still Shallow' that she's likely to get her wish. (from IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/news/ni0625752/) - he's definitely not coming back until 2009 if then. Having seen the recovery period on this type of surgery before, I'd say they are being very optimistic at even saying he'd be back at that point. It's not like he needs to recover just enough to walk upright, after all :-)

His run's finishing on January 10th? Yeah, he's definitely out; recuperating from surgery like this properly takes months.

Yeah. "Not before Christmas" is a pretty vague notion - he really should take off the rest of the run. Let Ed have his star turn, and come back another season.

They keep saying "after Christmas" and the difference between after Christmas and before 2009 is a fine hair to split for someone with a December 29 ticket.

I would not be surprised that they're not saying "he's out" baldly just to keep people from canceling tickets.

Appreciate the thoughts.

I always feel really sorry for understudies who have to stand in for big stars who are the main reason half the audience is there. It must be hard knowing that people are staring at you, trying as hard as they can to imagine you're someone else.

Hope you've had good news by now.

His understudy's apparently been getting standing ovations, though, so this could be a big break for him.

I'm amused that he was introduced with the "...you're coming back a star!" speech.

It's the RSC. They don't do bad, or untalented. That he's pulled it off at all with the weight of all that expectation and all that disappointment on him is really quite amazing.

It sounds as though the audience and critics are happy with what they see, though.
