I have two questions for the collective experience and wisdom of the flist:

1) Does anyone have an opinion on the Toyota Yaris?

2) Can anyone recommend good scrapbooking software - or is it going to be better in the long run to just mock up some page templates in photoshop? (And if the latter, can anyone point to a good repository of scrapbook page suggestions?)

1) Unless you are buying the Yaris outright then between financing fees and charges etc, you really don't save a whole lot of money in the long-term when compared to a small compact (Nissan Versa, Ford Focus, Chevy Cobalt etc...). If you are intending on financing you need to look at your car buying habits (do you buy every few years? do you drive a car into the ground?), if you're one of the folks who buy a vehicle and drive a car until its bitter death then you may see a long-term return on your Yaris.

2) Photoshop junkie, I can offer a very non-objective opinion here... ;)

I do tend to drive cars till the last gasp - it's just that the current one is gasping a lot sooner than expected. The Yaris also seems to have excellent mileage, and I know gas prices will head back up.

we used blurb (with their software booksmart) for our pics of italy and intend to use them again for others.

a few pages were full-sized collages (i've posted them before), made by picasa.

I'll look into it, thanks.

I test drove a Yaris last year and found it uncomfortable. Not as ungodly painful as the Versa, but not something I could sit in on a regular basis. YMMV, but definitely test it, long term if possible, before buying.

I've had the excellent advice to rent one for a weekend first.

After test-driving basically every economy model currently on the market, I spent MONTHS waffling between the Yaris and the Accent. The deciding factor in finally buying the Accent was that the CarMax nearest me actually had a year-old one on the lot, and I would have had to get a Yaris transferred.

My opinion is high.

Good!

Carmax only has one used one, and it's pretty old. Depending on the loan and what the insurance co. says, I may go new, even though I tend to object to losing so much of the value up front.

When I was shopping for cars, I heard and read good things about the Yaris. I ended up getting a Honda Fit because I wanted four doors, but the Yaris was on my short list.

That's good to hear.

The Yaris has four doors... or at least the one my friend has does.

According to Toyota's website, there's a 4-door and a 3-door.

I'm assuming the three-door is the hatchback, then? Otherwise three doors sounds a bit odd... ;)

A friend of mine swapped her Jeep for a Yaris about three years ago. She loves it- says she gets very good mileage, very comfortable and extremely reliable. She drives it in north-eastern Pennsylvania, so it gets used in all weathers and road conditions, and it's also been on a number of long trips, eg to NYC and Ontario. It also looks really, really nice inside; I like the dashboard a LOT.

I wouldn't remotely say it's uncomfortable, either. I've been a passenger in both front and back seats and had no issues. Okay, if I'm in the back seat for more than about two hours I'd want to get out and stretch my legs, but (a) I'm 5'10, and (b) if you're going to own the car, when would you be travelling in the back seat?

It has happened once, but that's pretty rare!

I'm going to try to go sit in one soon, maybe as early as Friday. I need to at least drive the thing before I make any decisions!

Oh, and I just bought the Stratford tickets. I'll be up August 13-15 of this year. Now I just have to settle the rest of the arrangements...

I don't have any opinion on the Yaris, but if you're trading in a car and owe any money on it, be careful.

My hope - we'll see how this goes over at the credit union - is to get a home equity loan (fortunately I've got a lot of equity in my home and it isn't underwater) and pay off the old car before I pay cash for a new one.
