Snow Day

The snow is coming down in big fat flakes and it's all very picturesque. However, I am ambivalent because the "yay!" and "Oh, crap" columns are pretty much evenly balanced.

Work is closed, yay. I am a subcontractor and will have to make up the hours. Not so yay. Snow pretty, yay. Shoveling snow, feh. Extra time to do work around the house is a good thing, but this doesn't make me any more enthusiastic to do said work.

Plus, am out of cat food, cash, and gasoline, and the plan is to die of old age before being eaten by the cats. I can go mushing down on foot to the 7-11 for a box of Friskies (bad for DB, but a day or two on them shouldn't bring back his kidney stones), although if things really do stop in midafternoon, I'm going to excavate the car and deal with all three issues.

Worst, it's another day without my restored hard drive. No work = no coworker to give it back. At least I can direct download Staggering Stories, so I can still listen to it today.

I filled the car yesterday. I don't normally bother before a storm, but the tank was almost empty and there were no lines.

But if I needed supplies, I can walk from here, and I probably would.

Good luck with the excavation and not being eaten by the cats.

*hugs* about having to make up the hours.

I'm between a half and quarter tank - lower than I want to be, not so low I'm really desperate, which is why it didn't get filled yet. And as a worst-case scenario, I can walk to both a 7-11 and a grocery store - although according to [livejournal.com profile] fandance, the grocery stories have been looted of much of everything.

The hours... well, I'm reminding myself that it's better to have to do that than not be working!

Yeah. I was just hitting a quarter tank yesterday, but the Mobil was there, there was no line and I wasn't in a hurry.

I imagine you have worse looting than we do as we're more accustomed to this. I'm low on one or two things, but nothing that can't wait until my regular Wednesday or Thursday trip.

Very true about the hours.

People go insane here if a single flake of snow is rumored to have happened.

Yes. I'm glad I don't live in a place like that.

I think I'd be perfectly happy living in Maine, Minnesota or Canada for the winter.

You would... until you realise that it goes on and on and on for months on end with absolutely no let-up! Our first winter here, we loved the snow. Until about the fourth time we had to shovel the driveway :P

This winter, we've had more than four months of it so far, with at least another six weeks to come. Yeah. Enough.

I suppose I'm thinking of ideal situations where I could hole up and not go anywhere.

Shoveling snow is not fun at all.

oh dear. Don't you know that weather updates serve the sole important function of being catfood buying reminders?

(this is another reason why I like being able to walk to the store, although I'd not want to do it this morning, looking at how the snow's blowing...)

I'm kicking myself because I'd meant to do it on Saturday before I went to the Pirate Feast. But I was dressed in garb and the store was in the opposite direction and I thought I had more than I did.

Heck, being in garb would have been the reason I went to the store!

In less cold and windy weather, yes!

I tried to call in, and my boss was on a dying cellphone, thus talked over me and said "I'll see you when you get in, don't worry about being late." and hung up.

... except that I was trying to call in to tell him I probably wouldn't make it in today, because even though I only live a quarter mile from a Metro station, it's at least four inches of snow, unplowed as of yet, and the sidewalks are treacherous when they're not shoveled.

So I guess I'm going to try to get to work today. Serve him right if I get there at 11am.

I HATE SNOW!

With a very fiery passion! (Not sure why, when it's only frozen water and that's my element, but there ya go!)

I sympathize. On Friday I was planning to get groceries over the weekend (I was out of practically everything, but it was a long workday and I wanted a night of peace without lugging six bags full up a flight of stairs), but at 5:00 p.m. it started snowing...and didn't stop...

So over to Hy-Vee I went on my way home. Sigh.

The snow is dying down, even if the wind hasn't, so I'm about to saddle up, dig out, and see what happens out there.

Humongous cases and bags of cat food from Costco are wonderful. For one cat, it's, like, a 6 month supply.

Snow pretty, yay. Shoveling snow, feh.

That about sums it up right there.

DB's on a special diet; keeping him in that food is easier than getting his kidney stones removed surgically. But that takes Costco out of the running.

Oh -- too bad. Well, I'm sure a couple of days on Friskies won't be too bad.

The drive is shoveled, the errands run, and I've got 20 pounds of food, which should see them for a while!

OT...

That about sums it up right there.

I must be an adult now. Instead of seeing snow that clumps and thinking "Snowballs!" I thought "damn, it's going to stick to the shovel."
