I've just been sent an article about those proliferating phishing calls saying you're driving without a warranty. Hang Up by Marcy Gordon explains how the scam works, an idea of the number and breadth of complaints, and how we are (at last!) on the verge of Federal response to "robo-dialer harassment."

Grrr, those wankers got ahold of my cellphone number. I am not a fan.

I once got 5 of the damn calls in a day. I'm averaging about 3 a week now, from different numbers.

We get that one all the time, and one about lowering our credit card interest rate. Last chance! Bleh. We're on the Do Not Call registry, and our fourteen-year-old car hasn't been under warranty for a long time, thanks.

Whereas my three-month-old one is covered by every warranty under the sun, so I'm hardly going to start paying someone else to "repair" it!

Dude. I didn't realize they were violating Do Not Call on top of everything else. That takes a special kind of stupid.

Yup. Violating DNC and eating cell phone minutes, because they keep changing numbers so you can't block the call.

I hope the Feds hand them their asses.

We only started getting them a couple of weeks ago, but for awhile they were averaging one a day for each of us on our cell phones. Snarlspit.

I get those D*mned calls on my cell phone- AND my STATE WORK PHONE! (What's funny is when the robo caller gets the conference room phone... in the middle of a meeting. I can always tell by the swearing that suddenly floats through the door...)
Yeah- I've taken to punching random numbers when I realize it's one of THOSE calls. The machine hangs up pretty quick then.

Ooo! I'll try that next time; I've been hanging up, which just means that it leaves a message on my cell, eating my minutes.

The car warranty robocalls drive me nuts at home, but it's work that's out of hand - we get 10+ robocalls a day, not car warranty calls, most with no opt out (sometimes with no opt IN either, so what's the point?) and the ones that do have opt out keep calling us anyway. I'd prefer Congress ban robocalls, period, not just car warranty.

I'd totally vote for that!

Never heard of this scam. Wow. Good thing I keep my cell off most of the time.

Won't really stop them - you'll turn your phone on and find 50 messages.
