It's an amazingly subdued con this year. Part of it is the hotel, which is trying its best to show willing but has a lot of work to do - the torn-up outside areas, the exit signs with dangling wires, the many secondhand keys which don't work (and some of which are advertising other hotels!) The router, although available, is running about dialup speed; it's not impossible to do what you want, but it's taking longer than expected.

And part of it is the people, many of whom have scaled back or not come at all. There are only a handful of elaborate door decorations. Fewer room dealers. Almost *no* vids at all - there were six gen vids. Six! Used to be the show took six hours! But now there were two for The Mentalist, one for Lonesome Dove, one for the con's take on The Amazing Race (the winners, a mixed race pair of nine-year-olds looked fit to burst with pride, but I don't see either of those girls here this year), one which has escaped me now, and SiDiC's usual tribute to everyone who has died in the last year. It's probably the only tribute to Julius Carry to emphasize Lord Bowler. I'm told there were only three slash vids... and in between was a 15-minute collage of Buffy and Angel scenes. No music, just a collage. For fifteen minutes.

Whoniverse-wise there are a lot of panels, but they're not all hopping. Too many are running aground on the base question; for instance, the question of "Where will Moffat take Doctor Who" was generally agreed to be "I don't know, but he keeps winning Hugos for the show, so I'm sure it'll be good." There's an upcoming panel on "will Captain Jack hit on anything?" and it's not going to take long for everyone to say "yes."

But I think the panels are going well - the Big Finish one was early and sparsely attended but people seemed to be happy. I hope my co-panelists were, because I had to keep reminding myself to STFU and let them get a word in edgewise! But most of the speaking was done by Big Finish itself - note to self: trailers and clips very good idea. Second note to self: double-check that you've actually clipped the Gallifreyan Buccaneer song and not the intro to it!

White Hart is having a sale on classic Who zines. Brotherhood 7, a multimedia with some Who and Torchwood looks good; I'm looking forward to reading my copy. But other than that, although Agent With Style advertises other Who & Torchwood stuff, all that seems to be for sale are the NCIS/Torchwood crossover and the Doctor/Rose fanzines that I got from Farpoint and an alternate universe Twood with no rift and no aliens which is all about Captain Jack's group marriage with Owen, Gwen, Toshiko, Ianto, and Rose.

Which is not my cuppa.

With no more panels to give and few on my must-see list, I'm going to take it easy - I have an exciting afternoon of napping, knitting, and reading ahead. And even with the sluggish Internet connection, I want to see if I can catch up on BF's latest 8 and Lucie adventure.

??!! Seems a bit pointless to me!

I'm not even pretending to know the motivation behind that one. I'm certainly glad I checked the info on it rather than knee-jerk buying anything new saying Torchwood!

Yeah - I'd have been really annoyed if I'd done that.

Cons across the board seem to be getting slammed by economy!fail. I know Writrcon's attendance is down from past events, and it's not from lack of interest but lack of discretionary $$$.

Stupid economy.

Yeah, money is a HUGE issue. I'm working hard at bringing my con budget in this year at something like half of what I spent last year, and next year I'm flat out not going to several.

I went up to Balticon at the Hunt Valley (Cockeysville, MD) on Saturday. Got there about 11 am and had NO PROBLEM finding parking (and I always have problems finding parking at the Hunt Valley) By the time I had to leave (4 pm), all the parking places were filled, but in years gone by, all the parking places were filled by Friday night.

The place had a lot of folks, but it was not jammed by any stretch of the imagination. Sunday may have been different, but I had driving duties for my older son so I didn't make it back up on Sunday. Oh well.

The lot at M*W was only about 1/3 full the entire weekend. A lot of people just can't do cons right now.

Yeah, the economy is to blame for a lot of stuff lately.

Errr, TW without the Rift? What's the point, then?

On the way to Menards earlier this afternoon to pick up more wood stain for the front porch, I gave my husband a year's notice: that if MediaWest was still in existence next year, I was going.

Many hugs, Nea; get some rest, enjoy some down time. I have to go make a dozen deviled eggs.

A chance to play with characters who would be perfect if they were almost completely different people, I think.

Yes, there will be one next year; registration is about to open downstairs.

I got no clue who wanted to write it, but judging from the nonshifting piles for sale, nobody's reading it.
