George Tiller shot dead walking out of church.

Doctor George Tiller survived clinic bombings, being shot in both arms, and years of violent threats. Women would come to him from all across the country, as he was the one of the very few who would perform late-term abortions.

Operation Rescue's smarmy obituary claims that it worked through peaceful channels (read: screaming at women, blocking the clinic, picketing his home and targeting his children) to stop him and fails to note that its many attempts only made him more convinced that his services were needed. OR's press release adds insult to injury by removing his title and claiming that the family needs to find Jesus, somehow missing the fact that the man was killed on the steps of a church. A church they claim they have the right to picket.) Priests for Life is apparently saying that the shooter may well be a woman angry over an abortion.


The police are looking for a powder blue Ford Taurus, license plate 225 BAB. A suspect has been arrested. It also turns out that he was not shot coming out of church, the killer went in and shot him as he handed out bulletins to people going into church, one of several ushers that day.

A grass-roots movement is already beginning to urge people to donate to Medical Students for Choice in his name.

If one is so morally against abortions (which is definitely a personal right I do not begrudge anyone) then work against it via peaceful means - whether by increasing sex ed/contraception availability or being more effective in preaching abstinence, whatever. Or even lobbying your congressman or mounting public opinion campaigns to change the law. Fine. Whatever. Marketplace of ideas and all that.

But shooting? WTF! Also, I looked up the kind of abortions he was providing and it's for situations where the mother might not even make it alive if she went through and gave birth! How can anyone in the world object to that? He wasn't helping women abort for jollies!

Except that's exactly what he's been accused of, if you look at the rhetoric that's been flying around. And always in terms of his killing little babies... nevermind that many of the fetuses he aborted were already dying or dead.

I come from a culture where abortion was not even a controversial topic (former USSR) and it took a few years here for me to even realize this was an issue.

I went through childbirth and it wasn't a fun time but it was still much better than having a knife cut into me (and that is the thing - I chose to have a child. I made a choice. A woman is not a breeding cow to be forced to carry a child to term). It boggles the mind that anyone thinks that women want to have an invasive surgical procedure for fun. Because it's so awesome to be cut into! Yeah, right.


And you are right - I looked up the kind of fetuses he was aborting - most would have had a few brief and painful moments of life. It is absurd to think that under current US law any doctor could perform third term abortions when either the life of the mother was not at stake or the fetus was not viable and not be clapped into jail right away. UGHUGHUGH.

UGH UGH UGH pretty much sums it up. It's insane. In many cases, it's not even a question of putting the rights of the fetus before the mother, it's putting the "rights" of a *corpse* before the mother!
