I am extremely relieved that of the people on my flist discussing the Roman Polanski petition, not one is suggesting anyone run right out and sign it. Quite the opposite, sometimes in capslock.

Nobody is so fucking brilliant that they get a free pass for violently fucking over a little girl.

The rest of the depressingly long list of signatories is disappointing in some cases, but not really surprising. Debra Winger can take a flying bloody leap.

They're all under the impression that it's just statutory rape, not that he actually raped her against her consent (which apparently according to transcripts and her testimony, he did.)

They're all thinking, hey, I've had sex under the influence, who hasn't?

And they're not thinking of whatever 13-year-old THEY know and how they'd feel if what happened to that young girl happened to the child THEY know.

Which doesn't make them not stupid assholes. Just explains why they're doing this.

The really pitiful thing in all this is that the more the case is publicized - both by Polanski's supporters and detractors, including the courts - the more the press hounds the victim and her family. Every time the subject comes up, she gets victimized all over again. And that is really not fair.
