Kitchen Notes

I've decided that every year I'm going to dedicate Veteran's Day to doing prepwork for the holidays. Various foods are on sale, it's reasonably close enough to Halloween for the half-price candy to be good enough to use and freeze, and it's going to save stress further down the line. Even years in which I work during the day, I can set up crock pots and make cookies in the evening.
I've got two crock pots going at the moment, and both of them are holding experiments that I hope work out because if not, that's going to be a hell of a lot of food to eat anyway. And one thing I *have* to eat soon is that bright orange cauliflower from the farmer's market. Damned thing's as big as my head!
CROCK #1: Pot Roast
1 chopped onion, 1 chopped sweet potato, 2 pounds of bison chuck roast, several flowerettes from the cauliflower, 1/4 bottle of may wine (I KNOW, but the only red I have is blackberry merlot), probably too much beef stock, and a package of onion soup mix. And a couple of gardenburgers, because I didn't know what else to do with them (turns out I don't like them.)
CROCK #2: Split Pea Soup
1 package kosher split pea with barley mix, made unkosher with a smoked ham hock plus a cup of chicken broth, 2 handfuls of lentils, 1 large can of chickpeas (drained), covered with filtered water.
I need to run some errands (starting with buying breakfast; I promised myself some Altanta Bread Bakery chai) and then I'm going to make and freeze:
- the family Christmas cookie (a sort of blondie)
- chocolate chip cookie dough
- peanut butter cookie dough
...and I'm going to look around for a new cookie to try this year. (Suggestions taken!)
And now to take the butter out of the freezer and buy my chai.

Date: 2009-11-14 12:36 am (UTC)I haven't tried the pot roast yet - it seemed okay. The split pea's... meh but edible. I didn't get to any cookies at all.
This weekend, huge amounts of rice and chicken cassarole, thanks to the sale on roasted chickens.
