I'm going to have to give up on the new adaptation of Emma. The main actress has neither charm nor charisma, and without either Emma's character grates.

On the other hand, this adaptation captures the pain of Miss Bates rather brilliantly.

I didn't even realize it was on tonight.

You missed nothing, although it will doubtless show up on DVD shortly if you want to catch it.

Is that the one with Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller? Because Jonny Lee Miller as Knightley? LOLWUT.

Is it the adaptation with Romola Garai? I really wanted to like that version, since both she and Jonny Lee Miller are usually credible. But I couldn't; my brain just kept comparing it unfavourably to the film with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam (they are pretty perfectly cast, y/y?)Also, wasn't so wild about the script :-(

Y, Y, Y!

The script had its moments - it was the best, most sympathetic way of showing the hell Miss Bates' life is and how she runs off at the mouth to hold the pain at bay, I will give it props for that. But otherwise - ugh!

How far along it did you get? Because I watched the first episode and was horrified with how flat-out meanly she played Emma, but found her way improved in the rest of the episodes. Of course, you could be further along than that episode, in which case I can get it just not working for you.

Elton returning with Harriet's portrait. I just didn't give a damn about Emma by that time. She has to have enough charm for you to realize that there's no malice in her, but this was coming across as Mean Girls, 1820.

Is that around where she's arguing with Mr. Knightley about Mr. Martin? It's literally right after that that her manner changes for the better, thank goodness. I guess the initial attitude was supposed to highlight the change her character goes through, but that girl was downright catty where she was supposed to be well-intentioned.

Precisely! You're supposed to think that she thinks she's doing good. This one came across as bored and not caring who she messed up.
