*sigh* That yarn I bought for my knitalong project? Is not going to work for the project I had in mind.

So I have three choices at this point. All of them would more or less fit into the original concept of knitting a block a week and having enough blocks at the end of the year to turn into a blanket. I have the yarn for all of them. But... which one?

1) Irish Chain: Long story short, I bought yarn that turns out to be nasty on the needles and very weak, but I bought too much to throw out. So I've blended it with a nice, sturdy cotton and started an Irish chain-style pattern. Advantage: Um, using the stuff up finally. Disadvantage: Not very portable.

2) Checkerboard: Using the leftover Doctor Who scarf yarn, I started making little squares. It takes me about an hour for each one (which is good, because I'll need hundreds.) They will eventually be sewn together in a checkerboard pattern. Advantage: fast and very portable. Disadvantage: hard to divvy up into "x per week" rations. A bit boring, because it's all the same stitch.

3) Log Cabin: I've wanted to do one of these since I first saw one in Mason-Dixon knitting. I have all the stuff I'd need, from the yarn I just bought at Stitches East (and several of the other tools.) Advantage: can be mixed up with random stitches as I get bored, so it will never turn into "same old, same old." Disadvantage: not very portable, would need to stop and ball all the yarn before I start.

Pondering

Would anyone be up for an afghan knit-along with me? It would be vaguely based on the Warm Up America pattern, meaning anyone wanting to do it would knit 1 35-stitch x 59-row (plus cast on & off) block per week. 49 blocks, and then we sew that bugger together and use it/give it away/give it to charity/shove it in a closet and never speak of this again.

I'm thinking that setting a goal like that would get me to actually finish a project for a change (hey, it's working with the Sunday 7!) and having people knitting along would be nice.

If you want a portable project, a single block that size would tuck fairly neatly into a purse or tote. If you've been quietly curious about knitting, or about trying new patterns, this wouldn't be a bad starter project, and if you bought the requisite yarn as you went (say, a ball every other week) then it wouldn't cost too much. *tempt*tempt*

Anyone interested? Knowing my readers, most of y'all could whip up a block while you're watching TV.
