Why do I suddenly have to sign up for a Gmail account in order to see this free pattern? If I wanted a gmail account, I'd have one already.

I cannot wrap my head around this at all. What is the point of pointing people to a "free" pattern that is neither free nor available? Why not make it a Ravelry download or sell it?

I remember knitting it and liking it, but did I print it out? Nooooooo....

The only thing I can think of is that this way (ironically) Google won't index the blog post and direct link to the pattern. If the pattern author wants to collect all the hits for the pattern -- for advertising or other reasons -- this is the way to do it. (Not that it isn't annoying, mind you.)
