Is there somewhere online I can get a potted history of feminism in Britain in the 20th Century? I know some of the American milestones, but I need to know the general Big Events for over the pond.

The History learning site has some stuff on womens rights in the UK up to 1945.

The wikipedia entry on feminism in the UK is a starting point.

Jenni Murray's personal overview on the BBC site is very useful (I remember being asked for a man's signature on things like TV rental agreements in the 70s.)

And if you can get to see Made in Dagenham that documents the strike that got women (almost) equal pay.

It is, however, generally agreed that Margaret Thatcher's premiership, far from being a feminist triumph, set the cause of feminism back by decades.

Thank you!

I know about Thatcher. TBH, I expect our first female President to be much the same. :(

Votes for women on a limited basis (over 30, householder or wife of householder or university graduate)1918
Votes for women on the same terms as men: 1928
First female MP elected 1918 Constance Markiewicz but as a Sinn Fein member she refused to take the oath of allegiance so never actually sat. The first woman MP to take her seat was Lady Astor, in 1919. First female cabinet minister Margaret Bondfield, 1924.

Sex Disqualification Removal of Disabilities Act 1919 allowed women to practice as lawyers.

1967 Abortion Act legalised abortion in Great Britain.

Definitely follow [livejournal.com profile] oursin - she's an archivist at the Wellcome Foundation with a particular interest in sexual health and gender issues.

If you get interested and want to spend time on this, there was a Masterpiece Theatre series called Shoulder to Shoulder some years ago.

... Okay, apparently it's not on DVD. Well, it bloody well ought to be!

So many things ought to be, says the person who is going through ridiculous contortions to legitmately purchase a legal product. If I'd known about the region sales lock in advance, I'd've asked the Staggering Stories folk to buy the CDs and bring them over at Gally.
