Mixed feelings on this one. Some parts I really like: The Doctor's doubt about Clara, Clara's objection to him making her watch the entire history of the world in a few moments. Also, good horror movie tropes. And lovely continuity! Both of the inadvertent kind, (hello house good to see you again!) and of the obvious kind -- nice shout out to Planet of the Spiders. But what was that thing at the end? Did the monster get split from a different monster? Is the doctor just handing over the time traveler because the monster fell in love with her? Why doesn't the TARDIS like Clara?

Doctor Who is best when doing Gothic stories, but this one failed the dismount.

Was there possibly a cut in the transmission you saw? It was obvious in the aired version here ...

I'm wondering the same, because it felt clear to me. I thought the Doctor explained it well. He even said, "this is not a ghost story; its a love story!" :)

There shouldn't be a cut - this was the iTunes download the next day. I did hear the Doctor's line, but it was unclear to me that he was speaking about a spare "monster."

(And although they're reunited... they're a long, long way from home, yes? Not that happy an ending.)

perhaps, but it was at least one of "a day like this" - everybody lives. Not many of those (and first since the dollhouse of 2nd half season 6 and the Wardrobe Christmas episode (though they left a plot hole about the other pilots, one severely wounded, on that plane once it landed). I'll take it as best he could manage in a short time frame, especially given the editing making it even shorter. :)

I was rather watching in a rush - I'll view it again and see what I think.

the comment isn't so much back in the woods, but a very short glance while outside at the house after saying goodbyes to the couple and the time-traveler. the shot back into the house's window is *very* brief (by then they were probably running out of time and had to edit sharply to manage to fit it all in. my guess is that there's at least 4 more minutes of footage involved in that sequence that had to get cut for time.

Yes, but that means that the episodes I'm buying from iTunes are cut like the American transmission, that *that* pisses me off, as I'm buying it all legal and everything.

no, i was describing the british version (not so legally acquired and I don't give a bleep as I'll shell out for the bluerays when the full season's out like I always do). it really was a rushed coda even there.

Ah.

Now that I'm buying on the ipad, I wonder if I'm going to be buying the DVDs or not. It's ironically easier to get it on iTunes than illegally dl it, such as when I was at 221BCon.

The first American transmission is never cut. I confirmed that with BBCA staff myself before the series started airing.

Used to be; in the RTD era, the whole codicil of the Doctor and Donna as household gods got whacked.

True, but they haven't done that since they started airing the shows on the same day as the BBC.

It was obvious to me - loved the Doctor's comment to the monster in the pocket universe when he went to get him: "Hello, Romeo!"
