Who died and made Locke Yoda? I swear, I'm calling him "Locke Wan Kenobi" from now on. [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess has his number good: So far, he's shown every indication of being one of the terrifying cult leaders who ends up convincing a bunch of people to drink the Kool-Aid before swallowing the barrel of a .45. He's persuasive. He's calm. He gives off this knowledgable aura that just makes people want to trail after him like lost puppies. And look who he's used it on so far. The prime examples are Charlie and Boone, both of whom when they were at their most weak-minded. It's getting to the point where Locke's gone beyond helping them and moved into scarier territory.

On the other hand, Jin and Hurley were comedy gold. I can just imagine the actors collapsing in puddles of hysterical laughter the minute the director called "CUT!"

I think that's part of why I love Locke. He's difficult to pin down and very complex. Yes, I think he's dangerous.. but at this point we're still shady on exactly who he's dangerous to.

I think in the end he's going to be most dangerous to himself, actually. And never understand, even as he's being (possibly) stoned to death, what it was that he did that was so wrong.

But yeah, an interesting character. Always has been.

Another thing he's also reminding me of os a Shamanic figure. He pay turn out to be the Shaman-type character. As in a way... Boone did need to get Shannon 'out of his sytem'. It was a crappy way for Locke to do it, but in a way.. Boone needed it.

Good point. I think right now he's revelling in the fact that his reality finally matches his self-image. And that's only reinforced because so far, he's batting .1000.

The minute he makes a bad mistake (and at this rate, he'll get someone killed) I think he won't be so much stoned by the others as crushed beyond repair by the loss of his confidence.

And once Locke loses his confidence, I'll lay odds that his legs stop working.

I won't take that bet, because I'm sure you're right.

I'm starting to think Locke has a serious Messiah complex. It makes for interesting television, but the guy is seriously creeping me out. He had no right to do what he did to Boone; tying him up and leaving him alone like that was dangerous and cruel. But what makes it so insidious is that there probably *was* an upside to it for Boone. After his hallucination he realized that, when he thought he was freed from any future responsibility for Shannon, underlying his grief was a feeling of relief. Maybe now he will have an easier time letting her go. But even if things do work out that way; even if Locke's little stunt *did* help Boone, it doesn't make what Locke did acceptable.

I think the end result with Locke is going to be some disaster when his bluff is finally called. The thing about him is that he's an amateur survivalist who looks impressive because he knows just enough to impress people who don't know better (to wit, everyone else on the island), but the fact of the matter is, he's a phony, and I'm hoping that the eventual plan is for his newly-able-to-walk feet are eventually revealed to be made of clay.

It's especially fun to watch the Dramatic Irony Shuffle as everyone genuflects over him while the viewers know how shaky the ground they're genuflecting on is.

I'm not sure how much of a phoney he is. Strategy games do teach strategy, and he obviously put a lot of time and effort into preparing for that aborted survivalist trip. While he hasn't had much field practice, he does at least have some serious book learning behind him. People follow him because he *has* been effective, up to hunting wild boar which isn't easy or safe.

Like everyone else, there's something he's not telling the others. Quite a few things. But he's also not completely pulling this out of his ass, so I'm not going to call him a phoney quite yet.

I'm less worried about his survival skills than his self-appointed guru-dom. That's the part that freaks me out.

Hm. Maybe "phony" is too strong a word, but he's not the Great White Hunter that everyone thinks he is, either. Like I said, he knows enough so that he looks impressive to them that don't know what's going on, and I just think he's bitten off more than he can chew, and it'll bite everyone else on the ass eventually. (Hm. I seem to have a thing for biting metaphors today. Weird....)

*grin* Since this whole phenomenon is barely on my radar, it took me about 15 seconds to properly parse the title of your post.
