Laurell K. Hamilton lays it on the line: "And by the way, as the sexual content has gone up, so have the sales of the book." No wonder she also says "we ain't seen nothing yet." She also gives a spoiler for Anita's newest marysue power role.

Major, major props for commentor "Entropy" for this line: "Hint: A real editor is a good thing"

Not up there with the famous Rice rant, though, as she hasn't started going on about interrogating texts or Dickensian principles.

Oy. *facepalm* Is it really that hard to let your writing stand for itself? And accept that some people aren't going to think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread? And ignore the ones who get confused and think they have a proprietary interest? And get on with your frakkin life?

And if it is, whywhywhyWHY insist upon reading the criticism???

as she hasn't started going on about interrogating texts

I still want to know if those texts are protected by the Geneva Conventions. 'Cause they might have been designated enemy combatants...

I feel conflicted, because I know Laurell's editor, and the first few Anita books are some of my favorites, but when she started ratcheting up the sex to PWP stages, I, for one, stopped reading them. Sex scenes should serve the plot, not the other way around.

And Goddess knows the Merry Gentry books are nothing more than Anita books with the names changed to protect the not-so-innocent. I couldn't get more than 10 pages into the first book before that much was so obvious I couldn't read any further.

I agree and I find that the attempts to turn the "ardur" or whatever into Some Big Meaningful Plot Point instead of a fuckfest are annoying. Which is why I honestly think it was refreshing for her to outright say "it's selling, people, better than the other stuff did."

The rest of the rant is another issue...

I'd like to say I'm surprised, but when Doctor Who started up again in March, the flood of "shipper" ficwriters was almost frightening to behold. And now that there's a male companion on board, you can hear the saliva dripping from the slashers.

And I no longer wonder why Hamilton's books sell so well.

"You tell me that there's too much sex, and part of me thinks, you ain't seen nothing yet."

From my understanding of the last book (which I haven't read), it went something like this: Hint at plot. Sex sex sex sex. Little bit of plot. Sex sex sex sex sex sex. Sex pretending to be plot. Sex sex sex sex. What plot? Sex sex sex.

And that's "nothing yet".

So the next book is going to be pure sex and nothing else? ;)

Apparently yes. But at some point they're going to stop having sex so that Anita can be a Federal Marshall.

Fandomwank has a link to a howlingly funny parody of her sex scenes.
