Ginmar, did you know that the Father's Rights movement has got big articles in the Washington Post and NY Times today?

Also, who saw the preview for The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe last night? I missed it and Mo wasn't interested enough to look. It's the SFX I'm most worried about; I keep having PTSD-style flashbacks to the BBC productions with the bad insertions and the panomime lion. Bad SFX for Narnia makes the baby Aslan cry.

Are You Pondering What I'm Pondering?:
I pitched I Love a Mystery Newsletter about reviewing and haven't heard back. I mentioned this offhandedly to the editor of Reviweing the Evidence and said I'd look for another review site. She said that there probably wasn't one, that the reason RtE was started was because there was a paucity of genre review sites. This surprises me, because I know there are tons of ones for SF&F; I must have had a dozen URLs on that list that I (damnit) lost.

So now am flirting with idea of setting up review site of my own, but not sure of what the hook would or should be. I know where I can get webspace 'n' stuff - I already looked that up for the Public Domain Gazette - but am not sure how to, or if I want to, set up shop. It wouldn't be fair to directly compete with RtE, so I'd need a unique spin on it, like only reviewing cross-genre or supernatural mysteries, or I don't know what. It might not be just mysteries.

Also not sure of how I want to set this up, or how to set a review site up, but... hmmm.

Anybody want in on the ground floor of a reviewing site?

What's Going on Today:
I've given my Big River usher spot to Smap, who will be going with Mo to see the Civil Service fair on the mall before going to see the play. I'm flirting with seeing Hitchhiker's Guide or just staying here and passing clots the size of kidneys. I do not enjoy being a girl.</lj-cut)

Really? I can't find anything in the Times at all?

Dunno if it's on the website, but the cover story for the NY Times Magazine is a guy looking grim with "I Want To See My Kids: The rise of the father's custody movement" on it.

I found it. Why do mainstream news organizations bother with these freaks? Must write letter to the editor now.

Never mind, found it. It's F4J, a group that [livejournal.com profile] trish_wilson has done lots of research on. They have no credibility whatsoever. I'm surprised anyone would waste the time on them.

Cover story of the magazine is a fair amount of publicity. Haven't read it to see how much credibility it gives the group, but they seem to be taking it seriously.

I think it's a section of the Post that has the woman's side view of how her ex has screwed up custody arrangements and called her a bad mother in the name of father's rights.

I think that was the Times - there's an article in there I read yesterday by a woman who's husband tried to get her declared an unfit mother to get sole custody, going on about father's rights, because his lawyer told him to.

The lion in LWW is being played by a lion from the Zion Wildlife Park in New Zealand. A friend of mine went there recently for her birthday.

That was a completely biased article. There was very little in the piece about just how bad these groups are, and how thorougly the F4J has been discredited.

And reviews? Dude, I'd do it.

Hold that thought, I'm seriously considering it. And it wouldn't be just mysteries because that would be unfair to RTE, so your horrible experiences with romances might come into play. Women reviewing books about women, there's a hook - and brings in F&SF, chick lit, romances, and cozies by the score.

Hmmmm.... Now I need a cute name for the site.

It sounds good! Just be ready for snarky comments from the Penzler types.

Not to mention, I could see publishing these stories in June, on Father's Day. Maybe. But to give them space on Mother's Day feels like some kind of slam at women.

Or maybe I'm just being hormonal or something.

Oh, there's no sub to that text at ALL. "Mother's day! Hah! What about us poor abused fathers? Over here! Put your attention over here, away from those bitches!"

$5 says there will be absolutely nothing in the way of a rebuttal for women on Father's Day "'cause you had Mother's Day already."

Red saw the Narnia preview last night and more or less ordered me to watch it when I got back to Omaha. It's breathtaking, the effects are seamless and I have a feeling that this is going to be a magnificent and faithful portrayal of the book.
