Call for Austen Fans!
Jan. 16th, 2013 01:28 pmAusten fans! Libby Anne at LoveJoyFeminism has asked for your help in commenting back on her post Removing the Romance from Pride and Prejudice. It's about how the homeschool/patriarchy/quiverful/stay at home daughter fringe of far right Christianity views classic literature, including and especially P&P. Specifically, she is looking for help rebutting the view of a linked and heavily quoted article about what Austen "really" meant in Pride and Prejudice is to not follow one's romantic impulses or embarrass the family.
I've said my piece, including the uncomfortable-for-the-patriarchy fact that I can't think of a single Austen story that does not include overriding familial displeasure as a major plot point. (General Tilney, Lady Catherine, Fanny Dashwood, the Elliots, the entire Mansfield Park posse, etc.) I'm sure some of y'all will weigh in with more eriuditionand have actually read Mansfield Park all the way through.
