You haven't seen real hell until you've seen a college production of "Our Town". Even going to school in New Hampshire no two students had the same accent.
On the other hand, Miranda Richardson in The Apostle is so good that the other actors were coming up to the director and asking him where he'd found that amazing local actress.
Oh, dear. And the sad part is, Southern is generally what Brits find easiest. There's so often a twinge of it even in attempts at a "generic" American accent.
Land of the Dead doesn't bother me too much, because with Tulong and the other Native guy you can chalk it up to bilingual/bicultural/whatever. Although I physically cringe every time when Tulong says "I'll catch you up." As for Brett, well, he's just weird. And his isn't too bad anyway.
We have the first seven, and I've listened to them all twice now while working on costumes. Must get more...
They've gotten most of the actual *sounds* right - assuming that all Texans sound like Foghorn Leghorn - but the pacing & pitch are completely off. In a veddy veddy British way.
*twitch*
Since there's so little difference between generic upperclass Brit and genteel southern - Peter Davison wouldn't have to work hard to sound like he came from Georgia, for example - maybe what's really bugging is the attempt to sound like a cowboy.
But I did have to give up on Land of the Dead. That was truely making me itch.
And yes - you must get more. I shall continue to pimp Storm Warning, Neverland, Zagreus, and Scherzo as a mini-season. And I just listened to the first "season" of the Sarah Jane Smiths with great enjoyment. They ended on a cliffhanger, drat them, so the new set will also need to be ordered at some point after I've paid for assorted plane tickets.
And I couldn't give up on Land of the Dead because it had the Doctor fretting over Nyssa. I always wonder if that feeling of responsibility (not necessarily merited, but he definitely had it) for her being orphaned was something Peter consciously carried over from his predecessor, or if she just came off as the most fragile of the trio who were with him most of his run. But he always seemed extra protective of her.
I also love the banter between him and the decorator, trying to deal with the critters in the house after the groups split up. And while I hadn't thought about it until today, part of the reason I like those bits best is that they don't involve anyone trying to be American...
I'll probably give it another try sometime - but in the meantime, I have 66 other adventures that I won off ebay, plus the ones I've bought, plus the ones coming off eps...
Hi! I saw you friended me (something I check a lot more now that I've had to go under lockdown) and popped over...
And since I *just* finished Minuet in Hell today I figured it was Kismet.
That was just...I mean...there really are no words, are there? The accents..the horrible demon who was trying so hard to be Skip from "Angel" and failing miserably. Crazy Doctor rambling in a totally boring way and a plot that, upon much reflection, still makes no sense. The only two interesting bits were being told that Charley was "dead" and Alister, whom I had barely heard of. LOVED him.
I hope to wipe the entire experience from my brain, and iPod, very soon.

I'm harmless, really. :>
Minuet in Hell was one of the wierder ones. (Although I've had to recalibrate my wierdometer after some of the SERIOUSLY strange ones, like Zagreus. Which I love, but is still full-body-contact bizarre.) I didn't overly hate it though (if I had, I wouldn't have bothered finishing it, a la Land of the Dead), but it's also coming off the iPod soon enough, and I'm likely to toss the disks into the eBay stack. It's certainly not up there in utter adoration like Shada, Zagreus, or Kingmaker.
the horrible demon who was trying so hard to be Skip from "Angel"
*snort* I hadn't thought of that!
Alastair Lethbridge-Stewart, the beloved Brigadier of the old series (only actor to get to work with all the original Doctors, IIRC) is a wonderful character and a wonderful actor. I really did have to listen all the way through just for him.
Well, even if you weren't harmless, your Buffy/Giles icon (which I've admired for a long time) would make it worth it. ;-)
And yes, Alastair (so THAT's how you spell it) was fabulous..when he was trying to log onto the website and kept getting the URL wrong and was moaning for the days of secret ink I actually laughed out loud. A very *Giles* moment.
I know there are good things coming with the audios, and I'm anal enough that I have to listen to them in order, so I'm biding my time. I keep hearing a about the arc o'fabulosity and can't wait to get there.
Isn't that the most wonderful of icons? Alas, I did not make it, I merely urged hildy to do so and then took it gleefully.
Now I'm thinking... t-shirts. Definately t-shirts.
I've been trying to listen to the audios more or less in order, but I don't have them all, and I was itching so much to hear Kingmaker and Zagreus that I couldn't wait. All I will say is... there's more Brigadier goodness to come. He was my favorite not-companion from the old days.
