Surprisingly little to report on Malice. The panels are good - every session, it's a hard choice between them - and the giveaways are good, but otherwise, things are much subdued. Jeanette (y'all know Jeanette: African Tudor. That Jeanette) thinks it's the greying of mystery fandom, but I think it's the economy. More of the raffle baskets are no frills; there are virtually no fancy book teasers, just bookmarks and postcards; several regular dealers are missing. Oddly, of the ones who remain, they're all focusing on high-end stuff: collectible used books and jewelry. Only two US bookstores are represented, and the UK one, who is suddenly offering a lot of used books.

[livejournal.com profile] tchwrtr, I've got a Sefton knitting mystery for you.

From I think [livejournal.com profile] fyrdrakken someone who sums up the Open Source Grope Project vs. Rennfaire Community far better than I did. With a bonus pertinent side comment about the kink community.

I was surrounded by people who were touch-positive, by people who didn't feel it was weird or unacceptable for me to want to display my body, by people who understood and accepted that it was my right to set my own boundaries about what I wanted to show and what I wanted to do. It was the first time I ever experienced an environment where the concept of "showing my body does not give you an implied license to touch my body" lived hand-in-hand with "explicitly permitting you to touch my body does not give implied license to perform sexual acts with me"....

No comments on tonight's Who because I don't like commenting halfway through a story unless I'm beta-ing it. Otherwise, there are too many unknown factors. However, I can say without spoilers that a couple of people who made a prediction based on a leaked photo are congratulating themselves tonight.

Although, I have to say one comment: Who on Earth in the English-speaking world doesn't know the line "In case of trouble, break glass"? I'm just sayin'.

An immigrant? (Not sure if you are serious or not, but I've had family members who have come to the US, even speaking English well, who may find that phrase strange and foreign. I can't think of examples off the top of my head, but more than once I've had them ask me to explain something I've said or something they've read that made little sense to them.)

PS - I loved [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic's post. She expresses, very strongly, a lot of my own world view.

That's a good point. (Although in this case, I'm just frustrated that Donna, having been faced once with the need to get from point A to point B by breaking a window, hasn't had the sense to realize that to rescue someone trapped in a car, she should do the same thing!)

Having actually seen the Mythbusters ep covering how to escape a car sinking into a body of water, I vaguely recall that breaking a car window from the inside is a stone bitch unless you've got the proper tool for the job (the little hammers sold specifically for that purpose work perfectly) and that if you don't have a tool and can't get the window down in time you're stuck waiting for the car to fill before the pressure equalizes and you can get the door open. So my only quibble was the question of whether the car door could be opened, and that was later taken care of when it was shown that the door locks seal you in when the car's trying to kill you.

ETA: And now I'm remembering that you're talking specifically about the scene with Donna's grandfather at the end, and I'm thinking that between her not having a tool to hand and her not having been able to break that window in PiC, I'm going to handwave that a bit. Though if the next ep starts with Grandpa being rescued by Donna coming up to the car with a big rock...
