I look around the chaos of the house, think about trying to live in it and the amount of work I'll have to do to get it organized, and frankly feel helpless and hysterical to the point of panic attack. So the pictures are really being reposted for me )

Because it's hard to measure progress without metrics, and because my OCD rather demands a List Of Things To Do, I am facing the organization process with these little helpers:

52 Organizing Missions (I have the ipad app)
52 Weight Loss Missions (app again)
Weight Watchers (it turns out that I can do WW at Work for 30% off the regular price, *and* without the evening commute that it would take to get to WW anywhere else)
and
The Science of Good Cooking by Cook's Illustrated magazine that *just happens* to have 50 chapter-lessons. It dings my pride to realize how much I still need to learn about cooking, but this will give a good structure to follow.

I'm also going to return to a year-long 7 Items Project challenge.

(Not to mention finishing the house. Yeeek!)

Yeah, guess what you're going to be hearing about every Sunday in 2013. Sorry, but without the name-and-shame of it, it's too easy for me to backslide.

I have decided on my resolutions for 2013, or more accurately, one overarching resolution: Git 'er done. All the things that need to be renovated, all the places that need to be picked up, all the stuff that needs to be gone through, all the organizing. Git 'er done, so that I can head into 2014 with a clear slate and the ability to find my shit.

This does not prelude my being at Gally and ChicagoTARDIS for the Doctor Who anniversary year, plus worshiping at the altar of Scott The First in Stratford. I *am* a fan, after all.

Speaking of fans, you may be aware that someone famous in comics has mansplained that cosplaying women at comic conventions are not "real" fans. I've seen scholarly takedowns and feminist takedowns, but Dork Towers does the best job of it in 15 panels. Do NOT fuck with costumers, dude; we know from experience just how much damage can be done to the human body with a rotary cutter.

And while I'm on the topic of self-appointed gateway keepers acting badly, the men behind I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere have put their foot in it by getting all "OMG, WTF?" over faunlock - which I had to go look up, but turns out to be BBC Sherlock as a faun. (The Greek mythological kind, not the little spotted baby deer kind.) They're old school Holmesians, so the whole way BBC Sherlock fandom is unabashedly bringing in all the usual media tropes is hard for them to wrap their head around, but don't take this as me making excuses because I've asked to their (Facebook) faces why this is quantifiably different than Basil of Baker Street or Wishbone.

Dudes! There are plenty of fringes that aren't my cuppa (Mystrade? Really? They've never met onscreen!) but picking one to make a public example of and apologize "on behalf of fandom" for? Bad form. VERY bad form. And also? You don't speak for fandom as a whole.

So, I went to Panda Kitchen all ready to buy this.
tuscany

Although St. Cecelia reminded me of Tuscany (where I've never been, I hasten to add, so we're talking fantasy here), it was also much darker than I originally wanted, to be honest. And then the sales person blew the sale and solved my dilemma by pointing to a granite that did not have a sample on the sales rack:
granite_closeup

St. Cecelia light. If I'd just seen that damn sample on the first day, I could have saved myself a LOT of waffling! As it is, I've saved myself a lot of money - regular St. C is $40 a square foot; light is only $25.

And while it will look good if/when I paint the cabinets white or veneer them birch, it still looks pretty spiff in their dark wood sample kitchen:
samplekitchen

It will be installed the Saturday after Christmas.

That, plus the dishwasher I'm going to be getting in the next week, concludes the big stuff that I'm paying other people to do to the house. Unfortunately, this doesn't mean that the renovation job is over (sob) because there's still a boatload for me to do. It's going to be (heavy sigh) one more year of work.

Feh!

Also, as I'm rapidly running out of year and I won't be putting any effort into the resolutions, I'm doing the annual wrap-up early. As usual, the resolutions I came up with in January bear only a vague resemblance to my accomplishments by December, but still, let's see how the tally goes.

Of the household resolutions, all the big contractor work is done. I still have a good 3-6 months of work myself and I want blinds, but the *big* expensive jobs - house painting, chimney reline, new kitchen appliances, new kitchen counter - will be done by New Year's Eve. Then I have to pick up all my crap - several rooms are dumps at the moment - and throw my rewarming party.

Personal Health. I've done nothing about the moles, but I've had a lot of dental work, so I'm counting that as an accomplishment. On the downside, I have not regularly exercised, I have not lost weight, I have not started cooking most of my meals, and I have not learned all the recipes I wanted to learn by Christmas. I'll give myself a half point for the Lunch Blox Bento, because that is at least the beginnings of a healthy meal plan. (I'm putting a fair amount of effort into learning soup and pasta salad recipes, on the basis that it's veg in the big container, soup in the medium container, pasta salad with veg in a small container for the starch, and fruit in the other small container. Sweets are a bite or two of candy tucked in.) But on the whole, this one's a big fat fail, so guess what's on next year.

Crafts, classes, and clinic shifts were not at the level of what I'd hoped to do/accomplish, but they're kind of "soft" resolutions - the sort of thing that I put up every year but are the first to get jettisoned when life goes pear shaped. I have resolved not to do clinic shifts when the temp's over 80 degrees because it's simply too hard on me.

Debt is below half of where I originally started; Discover isn't cancelled but it is at $0 and replaced. Without large contractor jobs/appliance bills and *if* I don't do a lot of traveling, I should be able to cut what I still have at least in half (God willin' and the creek don't rise).

I really hate the thought of putting England off yet another year - I've been promising myself a return trip since 2009! - but with Gally and ChicagoTARDIS and Stratford all in the running for 2013, odds are good that Media*West, Shore Leave, and England are on the chopping block. We'll see how the economy goes.

On the plus side, I've accomplished a lot of things I'm proud of this year.

I've set up the Little Free Library. VERY proud of that.

I've rejoined Sherlock Holmes fandom, made myself a part of Watson's Tin Box (and brought in 2 new members, one of whom has brought in a member of her own.) I've been to the Scintillation of Scions and two SherlockNYC events and a SherlockDC event.

I've been published in Outside In, done another series of edits for the race and Who anthology, and at ChicagoTARDIS was sounded out for a new book on Holmes and media, so the writing's continuing apace. There was also a piece of fanfic in there for The Science of Deduction.

I've adopted two kittens, who are well on their way to being cats now.

I'm not going to write the 2013 resolutions yet, but in addition to the usual crafting/health/clinic ones, I have the pitch for the Holmes and media book, plus the opportunities, if I choose to take them, to offer articles to the BSI and ASH journals and Watson's Tin Box's own annual. I want to finish the house redecoration/renovation. I want to actively work with SherlockDC on a scavenger hunt. I need to lose weight and I want to learn more about cooking and set up the "cook nook." I intend to kill as much debt as possible and still hit the big Who cons for the anniversary and see Scott Wentworth in Stratford.

So I've got plans.

Resolutions
Rather than post the entire Resolutions post, I'll just put the monthly part of the update here:
August
-- participated in SherlockNYC's scavenger hunt at the Natural History Museum NYC
-- set up and opened Little Free Library
-- moved, painted, refilled Grandpa's old medical records cabinet

Little Free Library
Until I sort through my favorite of the various book apps recced to me, I've decided to go with one I already had called "Checklists." It's actually meant for shopping, but it lets me enter the titles and a category, and I pop them in and out of "active" with a touch. (The categories are mass market, trade, audio, etc. There's also a category for "last chance" so I don't put out a book that isn't moving too often.)

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kefiraahava and The Book Thing (and one of M's co-workers), I have more than enough stock to completely change out the contents of the LFL every week for at least 5 weeks.

I screwed up the paper record keeping, but this last week, I know that these left:
- two tattoo-themed cozy mysteries. (The first one went the day after it went out, so I put out the sequel, which also left the next day.)
- Sleeping With Cats
- the Patti LuPone biography
- The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
- Nurse Nurse (the life of a British, male, student nurse)
- The Last Juror (I'm going to have to pay closer attention to the Grisham I put out so I'm not always offering the same book to the same fan)
- The Hunger Games
- The Friday Night Knitting Club
- Paradox Lost (I was surprised at how long it took the Doctor Who book to move)

There was also big turnover in audiobooks - The Intruders came back, but a few days later it left again, along with John Adams and Little Bee. They all went at once; the only audio left was one of the Big Finish Dark Shadows titles.

This long weekend, I've been catching up on various jobs. One was to turn this...

...into this:

Not happy with the patchy paint on the side, but as it is turning into my mini-office and it's metal, I can always stick magnets over the patches.

I also framed the art Team Purple Shirt won at the scavenger hunt...

... and put a pocket on the back (decorated with stickers from the clue package) to hold the email instructions, ticket, museum floor plan, and clue book.

It's hanging over the new cabinet. The skull eraser Becky gave everyone is balanced on top of the frame, so that it's with everything else from that day but it's well out of kitten range.

... I hope!

I'm getting busy at the closing of the year, and I intend to dedicate January 1 entirely to these three things:
1) sleeping in
2) doing nothing
3) squeeing bats out of the sky over Sherlock S2, ep1

Also, I'm trying to avoid some of the more boring chores of this weekend. So: next year's resolutions. I'm trying not to be so universally specific and detailed this year; it only leads to frustrations later when I change the list or the whole thing becomes OBE (overcome by events). These are the overall goals I really, really want to accomplish in 2012.

I was going to post an updated resolution list for November, and then thought "oh, screw it." There won't be anymore little resolutions this year, on the basis that all I have to do for the next few weeks is get ready for Christmas and crank out a Sherlock fic. As for the original set of resolutions... well, there was a 10-week period there where everything went wahooni-shaped anyway.

So, what have I accomplished in 2011? A bunch of little things, and three that I'm proud of:

1) I did major renovations on two rooms and a hallway.
2) I learned how to "read" knitting on the needles.
3) I damn well survived all the shit this year threw at me.

I know I've been chatty, but please go read this post and vote in the poll. Thank you.

As for the Sunday 7, Yesterday alone I: cleared all of the artwork out of the library and 3 halls; moved a chair out of the library; removed 5 bookshelves (first clearing 2 & 1/3); uploaded all my favorite 8/Lucie CDs to iTunes, did several loads of laundry; pulled down the hall closet sliding doors & hanging hardware; repaired 6 cookbooks; and cast on my first Mitered Crosses afghan block.

And then I wiped out every bit of that good karma in a careless second by smashing one of the panes in my grandfather's glass-front bookshelf.

I've tried to be a responsible adult about it: I cleaned up all the glass before the cats found any, took the doors off for safekeeping (the wooden tracery work is even more delicate than the glass), tried to convince myself that it's still a handsome piece without the doors, and solicited recommendations for glass companies (I now have 4 by name and 3 more places where I can ask for more help.)

None of which makes me feel one bit less of a fuckup who can't have nice things.

Today I've got: )

It's not technically new year yet but I've got a little bit of breathing time right now so...

I failed at both new year's resolutions for 2010. And, as I've learned before, not posting a monthly and/or weekly roundup means that sooner or later I don't have anything to discuss.

So next year, I'm going back to my original model: I've written up a big list of what I want to get done in 2011 from the large (redo living room) to the tiny (the wash cloths I want to knit to fill Mother's 2011 Christmas stocking). Each month that will be reposted, with whatever I've done crossed out. There may be weekly posts too.

I know that this isn't of interest to a lot of people, but it keeps me on track and to my surprise, there are some of y'all who actually read it. So that's what I'm going to do - under cut, of course!

The list )

There's a lot of knitting on here and my sprained finger refuses to heal. So I hope I can get it done without messing up my hand!
neadods: (contemplative)
Can we move Christmas to January 25? That would work better for my schedule.

As usual, despite my best plans, Christmas is sneaking up on me too fast and New Year is staring me down with a disapproving expression. I started this year with only two resolutions.

I have, by any measurement, failed egregiously at both of them. What I'm doing about that. )

tl;dr: Somehow I've managed this year to spend most of my time doing neither what I want to do or what I need to get done. In a few weeks, I start over.
