I've learned something more than a little shocking today - that Doctors Without Borders has set up its first US outpost in the shattered remains of Brooklyn and the Jersey Shore. That's how bad things are in the wake of Sandy.

And so I'm going to pass on something that I already knew -- if you knit or crochet, there's a website called Pennies Per Hour of Pleasure aka p/hop. It's a library of exclusive knitting and crochet patterns - download what you want, donate what you feel it's worth. Every penny goes directly to Doctors Without Borders.

I know that both Ravelry and fandom have long since started their auctions and relief efforts, and anything you can do to help is Of The Good.

But know that p/hop is out there too.

I've been offline all day going through boxes of books and decanting them back into the library. I've punted on some boxes, with the intent of going through later (such as my Mother's Nancy Drews and a boatload of Star Trek novels).

There are 10 Xerox boxes of books going to The Book Thing.

And there are several boxes of books set aside for that auction-for-Doctors-Without-Borders idea I mentioned a while back. The "the more you bid, the more you get" one.

However, since I'm going up to the Book Thing anyway, if there's stuff I've set aside that nobody wants, I'm going to haul it up too. What's one more box? So you tell me: what sort of book would tempt you?

[Poll #1745579]

There is a boatload of mystery books to go. Some are first edition. Some come in series sets (as in, I will offer much/all of the series). Some are signed. (One or two are signed to me; I will tell you before you bid.)

Old Fandoms - You can be the first person on your block to own a copy of Han Solo At Star's End! You can be the first person below the age of 40 who knows there even was a book called Han Solo At Star's End! Old fandoms in this case are Beauty and the Beast, Alien Nation, and Quantum Leap. (When I go through the "punt" boxes there will also be Star Trek TOS offerings if there's sufficient interest.) Not fanzines; the professionally published paperbacks.

The next two categories speak for themselves.

Oddities are things that don't fit other categories: Voices of War (which is interviews with soldiers from WWII on), signed by the editor. An anthology of medieval book curses. One or two audiobooks. (I am seriously considering a Murder Most [Stereotypically] British basket - yarn, knitting needles, mystery audiobook, teacup & saucer, tea. Bath salts and trashy romances are also an option, but right now I'm not worrying about theme baskets so much as which type of book I should keep on hand.)

Yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] gem_pinkeh set up a fundraising page to send money to Cancer Research UK in Lis Sladen's name.

The first goal was 150 quid. It was hit in two hours.

The second goal was 500 pounds. It was hit by the end of the day.

Today the goal was reset at 2000 pounds.

The amount when I went to check for this post? 2925 and climbing

I couldn't be prouder of fandom.

The background: I miss knitting. I've been way too wrapped up in the rest of my life and deadlines to seriously think about picking up new projects or even starting something that requires much brain and yet at the same time I want to be working on something, and more than that, working on something that has a purpose.

Lacking knowing what *I* want, I figure I can start cranking out things that will aid other people.

I've found my charity knitting project. AFAICT, it can be light lace scarves or heavy winter scarves or (depending on the group receiving it) more of a shawl/mini afghan/not-baby blanket than a scarf, so it won't get monotonous. There's an in-state branch, although not an in-county one, and I am STERNLY telling myself that attempting to organize anything of the ilk is strictly out of my purview until the house is in order and the yarn-and-fabric swap has been set up for Team Wench... although I now know one of the yarn charity boxes that will be set up at said swap.

No pity, no shame, no silence... two needles. Yeah. This is what I need to be doing.

Y'all with [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti auctions already running - what's more popular, goods (winner will be sent a physical whatever) or services (winner gets fic, icon, editing, etc.)?

And in the same vein, what do you think would bring more $$ - a one-off auction of a thing which would only have one winner, or "anyone who donates $5 gets a private message with a recipe/knitting pattern"?

[livejournal.com profile] honorh is starting a new meme: fandom-based Lyttony aka "Do the Bulwar-Lytton Contest for fanfic."

Not that fanfic tends to need help in this area (oh, don't look at me like that; the longer you're in fandom the more you know that Sturgeon's Law applies double) but her entries are hilarious and you know you want to play.

Apparently I will be knitting scarves for a while. Coates & Clark is having a drive to get 5000 scarves for the athletes in the special Olympics. You have to use their yarn, but it's not that expensive. I do need to find out if it's hard to get those colors or not. There's an official pattern, but they say you can also do freestyle as long as it hits the same size.

bookmarked for future reference: trying to decide if I want to buy Thursday's Atlantis stole pattern or not.

Bob Greenberger has a post about his son's last week. I didn't really know Robbie very well, but he was, and I mean this in the best sense, the best of what it is to be a fan - vibrant, intelligent, witty, passionate about what he was interested in. I cannot imagine the hell his family is in, losing him just as he was ready to step into adulthood.

Robbie was given the best care possible by his family and his friends. Tomorrow, I am joining a group of friends who are going through the last possessions of someone who died of years of denial and self neglect. Take care of yourselves, people. There is no damned good reason Amanda is gone from this world.

To end on a hopeful note, the Red Scarf Project is accepting scarves from September 1 through October 31. Red Scarves are given to foster children as they age out of the system and head to college. They must be washable, between 5 and 8 inches wide, and 60 inches long. They do not have to be red - any unisex color such as black, teal, olive, dark blue, etc., is acceptable.

The website links to some patterns. Other good unisex scarf patterns are available for free from Now Norma Knits, Lily Chin, Yarn Harlot, "Susan" (Susan's Scrunchable Scarf is my Ravelympics pattern), Hello Yarn, Anna Dalvi's Knit and Knag (pdf), Pierre the Yarn Snob, and Misti Alpaca (pdf). There is also a long list of pattern links here on [livejournal.com profile] crazycatladymel's journal; she also has a set of links for things like info cards, tags, etc.

I shall take a break from fretting over my unfinished story and my woefully behind Ravelympics project to break my newly-made resolution to not commit myself to anything by pledging to cast one onto needles as soon as I'm finished with the Ravelympics.

I've already mentioned Katie Greenberger's yarn raffle drive for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in honor of her stricken brother. The response was so tremendous that she has raised the bar from $500 (which came in 12 hours) to $1000 and then $2000, which is coming up fast.

She now has pictures of the yarn she will give away on her blog. It's not too late to essentially put in a $10 bid on a chance of winning some very expensive handpainted, mostly woolen yarns, and all for a worthy cause.

(Although I do note with some amusement that Katie is probably resenting being called "Katie" instead of Kate, as she tends to call me "old" when she thinks I'm forgetting that she's more than 4 feet high these days... one of the perils of establishing adulthood among people who remember you at age 12.)

First and most importantly: Robbie Greenberger (son of author Bob Greenberger, brother to "Cairo Kate" aka Alice the Cooper's Daughter of the Boogie Knights) has been diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia.

Katie's fighting back with a raffle on her blog: I want you to donate to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in honor of Robbie Greenberger... For every $10 you donate between now and Sunday, February 24 in honor of my brother, your name will be entered in a raffle for yarn-y goodness. If you are a non-knitter and win a raffle prize, I will come up with something for you. So far, prizes include Claudia Handpainted Yarn Silk Lace, Dream in Color Smooshy, Fleece Artist and more. I will be photographing and posting the prizes over the next two weeks.

I urge all knitters to enter this raffle, and I urge y'all to take a good, hard look at your stashes and see if you could maybe shoot her another skein or two.

And spreading this link far and wide would be A Good Thing.

Making your own double-pointed needle holders. How cute! How easy! I've been attracted to the double-pointed style of stitchholder, and these would be easy to use for that purpose as well. Especially if I ever get around to that log cabin knitted blanket I want to make.

Geekery and Charity
How rich are you? Six of the original Doctor Who costumes are being auctioned off... including Chris Eccleston's jacket. Also Star Wars costumes, including one of Alec Guiness' robes.

Excuse me a moment, I have to wipe drool off the keyboard and monitor.

Handcrafts and Charity
A page one article (even in the B section) of the Post plus top billing on the website is going to ensure that these charities get swamped, but I'm going to do my bit too:
With Gratitude in Every Stitch: Washington Post article on quilts for wounded soldiers
Quilts of Valor Foundation
Operation Kid Comfort
Home of the Brave Quilts
Marine Comfort Quilts

From the food section of today's Post, the Baker's Edge, a baking pan that uses channels to maximize the "edge" of baked goods. More information at the article, the maker's website, or the Baker's Catalog.

There will be a line of Sarah Jane Smith Adventures toys. To include action figures (I have no doubt that in the hands of fans, Sarah Jane will finally be getting a little something-something with Action!Jack and any/many variants of Action!Doctor) and sonic lipsticks.

Yes, I want a sonic lipstick. Badly. Yes, I am sad, sad little femmefan geekgirl. Nothin' wrong with that!

I have a feeling that Fortnum & Mason's website is supposed to overawe me rather than make me snicker: We are still at 181 Piccadilly, just as we have been for nearly 300 years. Green Park and Piccadilly Circus tube stations are equidistant and we are an easy stroll from central London's most salubrious hotels.

I'm getting images of one of those measuring sticks they have outside amusement rides, only this one says "Your IQ must be this high to shop this store." Will they let my lumpy American self into their purveyer-to-royalty presence if I can define equidistant and salubrious?

Libertys of London is much more direct and welcoming: We will be happy to swipe any of these cards as many times as you like; [long list of credit cards, including the rare AmEx]. Foreign money is no headache for us either, we’re happy to accept most currencies at our till points. Just ask any assistant.

In other words: Your wallet must be this fat to shop this store...

A google search for "yarn store: London" netted me a hit on the Libertys Needlework department, which the Libertys website isn't mentioning. Worst case scenario I scoot up to Islington to the yarn store I did find with a website, but I'm probably going to stick my nose into Libertys just because it's *Libertys of London* after all!

The Must Go/Might Go lists have gelled )

Obligatory non-travel: Another Knitting Charity

For those who have a little spare time and spare yarn, The Red Scarf Project, 2007 Basically, the Orphan Foundation of America collects scarves through the month of January to give as Valentine presents to foster children as they age out of the system and head to college.
Pdf with sizes and colors here. (Think unisex) Check with your local yarn store; they may be collecting for the cause, as mine is.

Now I know what my knitting project for the trip will be!

For the spiritual crafters - Shawl Ministry, on how to knit or crochet prayer shawls, complete with creation instructions and multi-cultural prayers. Whether they are called Prayer Shawls, Comfort Shawls, Peace Shawls, or Mantles, etc., the shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the recipient. The intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered before the shawl is sent on its way.

For the Captain Jack Harkness fans: If you haven't read the infamous guinea pig story, then do so now! (Racy, but should be more or less worksafe unless your job objects to double-entendre and non-graphic description of guinea pigs making the (very small & squeaky) beast with two backs.)
